Afternoon all,

todays project is to replace thermal paste on laptop cpu. Its an acer aspire 5742.

I've managed to disassemble it and have started cleaning old thermal paste off. However, something seems odd. The old thermal paste was smeared all off the the two contact points and covered most of the back of the processor (Intel i5 450m) and one to the back of the processor circuit board where it covers ~20 little nodes. Is this by design so i have to cover them also or should i just try and cover the two contact pads with paste.

ta,

Si

Just the two CPUs, it sounds like someone has gone mad with the thermal paste.

Just use a pea sized amount(approx depends on size of CPU) on each chip and replace heatsink, the heatsink will spread it out.

Just use a pea sized amount

If that. Then try to scrape most of it off with an old credit card.

Also, get some of this.

Makes like immesurably easier.
