One side - spillage. Both sides, keyboard/cable fault.

I'd say if it's one side, hardware damage, both sides, software fault (assuming all other keys are working)
In true IT help desk style, have you tried shutting it down, giving it a moment and then restarting?

noticed that the case had separated on the right hand side. will interogate my 2 year old.
