We are off to Hungary on Friday for a friends wedding in Gyor and then driving down to Lake Balaton for the rest of the week and I was wandering if anyone has any inside knowledge of good places to go/eat/drink.

We are Four adults, a 2.5 year old and a 9 month old by the way.

I have looked at all of the guides and have a few ideas, but if anyone has any other suggestions that would be great.

We'll have a car so can travel a bit but it would be good to stick to trains/busses where possible.

Eat cherries. They're in season and you'll find them all over Hungary.

You can get a direct train to Budapest for a daytrip if you fancy - giving you an opportunity to visit the market designed by Gustav Eiffel (of Tower fame) and buy some cherries for the journey back. It's 3 hours or so each way, though.

There's plenty of little resort-type places on the outskirts of the lake selling lilos, dingies, buckets & spades, etc. Some of the beaches are part of resorts and you can't access them. You can probably find a nice enough place to eat just by having a wander. I went to a good Italian restaurant, but can't remember exactly where or what it was called. (I know, Italian in Hungary, but I'm vegetarian and Hungarian restaurants aren't particularly obliging in that respect).

We drove there a few years ago, during easter, so there were not many people around. We just spent a few days relaxing and swimming(cold!). From what I remember, the campsite was excellent and the people were friendly. Sorry not a great deal of help!

Good spot to sail, not sure about boat hire tho'

Good wine area too - hotels tend to be a bit 'soviet bloc' but an experience never the less.

I was there for a weeks yacht racing so didn't see as much as I could have.

Thanks all - I had heard it was good for wine - problem is, the missus is 3 months pregnant so I need to be careful of rubbing in the fact she can't drink!

We have hired a house near the lake in Balatonlelle - looks like a nice relaxing place which is just what we want - especially after a car-plane-bus-train-car journey to get there via Gyor!

Just hope my cold doesn't raise questions about pig flu!

We hired some windsurfers there, very beautiful and relaxing- but that was about 11 years ago. Have fun and I'm not at all jealous

The other holidaymakers will mainly be German. You may think this is a good, or a bad thing.
