Every now and then I've had pain on the back of my kneecap, from what I presume is cartlidge being displaced or something. My Mum had this problem many years ago, only hers sort of exploded all at once during a netball game.
Is knee cartlidge generally mobile? Is it normal to have a bit of pain now and again? It seems to go away presumably something popped back into place. My knees have often clicked gently ever since I was a kid which has always made me wonder if something bad was happening. Sometimes if I bound up stairs with a twist I'll put something out of place and have kneecap pain again for a few days. Except I don't have any real problems, I can ride as long as I like without issue normally.
So, do I have an impending problem or not?
It's basically a big squishy washer. If the surface is torn, a little bit can pop up an cause clicking/pain. Perform the right movement and it might pop back down again, meaning the pain goes away.
You can get the torn bit scooped out with keyhole surgery. Recovery 6-8 weeks.

Or you can just wait and it normally fixes itself. Mine healed eventually.
That seems to match my experience. It's happened half a dozen times probably in the last 20 odd years, as a result of strain and twisting at the same time. And it's always gone back in a few days.
I often notice the clicking though, but I don't know if it's permament because when they aren't clicking I don't notice them.
Mine was very intense, I was out running and one heal strike no pain, the next it felt like a match had been lit under my knee cap. No clicking, just sharp focused pain.
Consultant recommended waiting and sure enough it fully healed after about 9 months.
Think that's what happened to my mum. She landed badly during a game and went down with uncontrollable screaming. She said the embarrassment of everyone looking was worse than the pain though.
Could be a few different things. Calcium “nodules” building up on back of knee cap and irritating cartelidge?
Can you kneel down ? (Housemaids knee)
Clicking is bone on bone, can be due to strains / stretches losening the joint as you suggest
Clearly IANAD
BTW I have just had an injection in each knee which is designed to slow cartelidge deterioration/damage causing arthritus. Too eariy to tell impact as I have to wait a month before excersizing. Friends who have had it done are positive though. Lasts 1-3 years. Done privately in France £200-ish, UK quote was £350 and not available to me on NHS.
