[Closed] knee brace suggestions

So I have a bit of a problem with my knee cap being unhappy in its normal every day position and is much happier on the side of my leg.

Have been toying with the idea of getting a knee brace moto -x style, but have concerns about how well they work on a pedal bike.

They will not be used for going up hill or on any lengthy rides. However a few pedal strokes now and again will be helpful.

any suggestions.

How about getting some professional advice about your knee?

Ok not an expert but my physio recommended a "VULKAN Neoprene Knee Free Patella 5mm 3041" as my knee had a history of doing the same thing. It was fine for using on the Turbo trainer, but I can't say how it was when mtb'ing as I only used it while my knee was recovering.

As twohats says go see a professional...

braces will not solve the problem
see a physio or oesteopath
patella mal-trackings quite common, it can take a little while but it's easily sortable

rudiboy the oesteopath that I've seen is an athlete!!
Ironmans but mainly a pretty competative time trialer

you do need to look around to find somebody you trust and can appreciate and understand your goals

there are a lot of profesionals out there that don't for sure!

29erKeith is right.
Also, some knee braces could do more harm than good!

Those moto-x style braces are designed to stop the bottom half of your leg bending sideways with respect to the top half. As that's not your problem then they will serve no purpose for you other than looking impressive ๐Ÿ™‚
Get yourself local recomondations for a sports pysio, massager as a first point of call.

I'd personnaly recommend an oesteopath
as they should try to get to the root of why instead of just treating the the knee pain

i.e. it could be a back or hip thing which is causing the knee problem
I'm not sure a physio will look for that first, but will likly just look at the knee first and thats it

If your any where near southampton I can recommend one

Sorry I should have mentioned that there is a family history of this...i.e. my dad, my gran, my sis all suffer the same problem.

"Professinals dont ride bikes..."

Sorry I have to disagree with you their. My wife is an orthopaedic surgeon and she rides a bike. In fact the many of her colleagues are avid mountain bikers or road bikers. But hay maybe your right speaking to an expert who knows all their is to know about legs and injury is irrelvant compared to the amount they ride a bike....

I had the cartilages removed from my right knee 30 years ago, and now the joint is pretty unstable. Always get inflamation from cycling, walking etc, so a good brace is critical for me as it provides extra support and stability. I have used one of THESE for a couple of years now. They are much more efficient than just neoprene tubes and they are made from a wicking material so don't get horribly sweaty. Also not too bulky so fine to wear under ordinary pants without creating a sinister bulge

CM

I like the look of those. Will look into them in a bit more detail. I think they will be spot on if you can remove the area around the patella. They will be just the correct size to wear under a set of pads.

RB, you can't remove the area around the patella, but I wear mine fine under a 661 Evo knee pad - it's not that thick
