Dont know whether to be happy or sad ..nothing to be done but still hurts particularly when walking any distance + gives me what appears to be referred pain above and below knee.
Done strengthening work etc.painkillers dont have much effect.could be a lot worse though..
What next?

I have what sounds like very similar issues, also had an X-ray and assessment which showed no obvious damage. Walking downhill seems to be worst then uphill or flat terrain. What partially worked for me was slowly but steadily increasing the distance that I walked. My knee used to hurt after around a mile but I can normally do 10 miles at a decent clip now without an issue.

Bakers cyst?

Think that's what mine had, no arthritis or anything to cause it though, cyst of some kind 10 years ago so can't remember the detail. It would occasionally and almost randomly swell up massively, eventually I walked to the consultant's appointment at the hospital to prove there was something wrong as I was getting fed up of going round in circles only seeing Dr's on good days and just being sent back for physio!

You need an MRI.

An x-ray will pickup broken bones or (I think) calcium nodes inside the knee but tell the doctors zero about ligamnet or meniscus/cartelidge damage

muppet ligament damage imo - classic symptom it hurts more to walk down

I had ligament damage - a poorly healed tear had left a 'lump' on it where it slid past a bit of bone.

Ended up with a physio 'redamaging' it to breakdown/get rid of the lump and then did work to make sure it healed successfully.

the process of pressing *really* hard on an already sore tendon on the back of my knee was every bit as painful as I expected it to be.

Both an x-ray and MRI had shown no mechanical/joint issues.

knees have been crunching badly for years .pretty sure i tore/damaged my medial meniscus years ago on the worst knee side. Also had water on the knee after a pub fight! had that drained off with an elephant size syringe.
No swelling since but knee has always felt kind of out of line and clicky if you know what i mean ..also if i press on the knee cap and push it down it sure feels rough like a bastard file !
Oh yes ..forgot to say ..I am advancing in the years (53 ) and told it was arthritis initially which probably is a general term used by docs to get rid of worn out folk. Thinking of trying Turmeric golden paste as plenty of anecdotal evidence it helps with pain and worth a try. Also used capsaicin ( from chillis) for a short while as very effective with arthritic pain but By Jezus the stuff i bought was so flipping hot i could barely sleep and you can't wash it off . The heat lasts for ages too . apparently it eases with time but I couldn't cope with the super strength stuff i experimented with , even in tiny amounts and gave up !
