So I have an 11 year old A4 estate TDi (I know I know, but the 1.9 is great engine touch wood the last one did 240,000 miles), now getting key immobiliser issues, my local vw-Audi indie garage tested and agreed, but a new key has to come from Audi main dealer, roughly £180+....and then be re-programmed for my car.
So any way around this or cheaper options, anyone work for Audi in Germany!!!, I am currently using the spare key, but I would like to see in any options.
Thanks

you're on the wrong forum! check out the Audi ones....masses of info on them, might take you a while, but you'll probably find the answer.
Have a look in Yellow pages for a mobile auto-electrician or auto locksmith that will do the programming for you. You will need to travel to them as the job won't pay enough for them to come to you. I was quoted £50 for a reprogram by the local (Suffolk) chap but I had to find him out in the boonies or wait for him to be in town to get the job done.
Thanks, I will do some more research:)
Take the transponder out of the good key and fix it against the ignition barrel but inside the plastic cowling of the steering column.
Both dumb keys should then work as the chip that is normally inside them is also positioned by the ignition.
Obviously the immobiliser is now over-ridden but it doesn't sound like a valuable car. Also not sure how this affects things like remote central locking.
I have a similar aged VW passat and had an issue with the remote not working until right beside the car. Found it wasn't the battery so I eBayed a new remote using the model number visible when you pull the key apart. Clipped this new remote into the original flip key bit which contains the transponder, a linked the new remote to the car. Still works a treat and that was a few ago and don't worry about linking the new remote to your car it doesn't need anything more than your spare in the ignition while locking/unlocking the car. Google will get the exact instructions.
I've reprogrammed the key fob after it's been for a spin cycle in the washing machine. You have to put the 'broken key in the ignition and turn on but not start the engine, then lock and unlock the car using the other key.
From audiworld...
You will need BOTH of your "switchblade" keys to reprogram one or both of them.
Take the key you DO NOT want to program and put it in the ignition. Turn it one click forward.
Close and lock the drivers door with the second key.
On the second key (the one in the drivers door) press the 'UNLOCK' button ONCE only. The lights will flash on the car, but the doors will remain locked
With the second key still in the drivers door, unlock then lock the door again.
Pull the key from the slot and test remote functions.
Open drivers door, remove key from ignition.
If both of your remotes don't work, do the above for the first key, but on step #3, press the 'UNLOCK' button twice. The lights will flash twice, then continue on with step #4.
HTH
I45Key that is syncing the central locking with the key, not the immobiliser.
Timpsons the shoe place have certain branches that copy keys and chips. I had mine done last week took 2 mins £35 works perfectly and it wasn't even the master key I had
