I've been using some battered old JVC ones for ages and haven't really appreciated the sound quality of an ipod until now. I haven't spent a fortune. In fact, just £28. I bought a pair of these on the Tottenham Court Road yesterday, while in the Smoke on a business trip.

Those hi-fi shops there look a bit dodgy and I wasn't sure whether I'd bought well. But, after getting home and chilling out last night with the ipod on, they've given me back real hi-fi sound that I've been missing for ages. Loads of dynamics and separation of instruments. Best thirty quid I've spent in a long time.

I have some Sennheisser CX300s which are excellent but flawed. The problem is that if the cables move, they transmit mechanical noise up to the ear buds. So they're great sat on tranes, planes etc but not so good out running or in the gym.

Good show! A great thing about well-fitting in-ear 'phones is that they block out external noise letting you hear the music at lower volumes. More musical detail and less hearing damage.

Don't let the HiFi gurus hear you say 'iPod' and 'real HiFi sound' together though, your good news could turn into a long thread.

Mechanical noise can be reduced a bit by looping the cable over your ear and leading it down your back. Some earphones have bendy bits in the cable covering near the ear to help this by keeping the shape and reducing cable strain.
