Excellent at club level. Think people expected too much at national level. Especially after his famous goal against Brazil. He did always look like a secret piw eater tho.

Too true! I was at Wembley in 93 for England v Holland and he was getting boos and assorted abuse from the start, after about 4 or 5 mins England had a free kick just outside the box out to the right a bit, he stepped up after all the abuse and put in into the top corner!
Soon shut the idiots up that did!
He was also my first 'favourite' player as a kid!
a few months back when he was managing Tranmere Rovers he used to ride to the ground every morning........and I used to fly past him every morning with a cheery 'good morning'. After a couple of weeks he was a tad faster though, too many Mars definitely!

We saw that last night and were gobsmacked how much of a chuff he was! Mr MC is adamant it's a looky likie and not the real deal!

He was very polite to my wife the other day, seems like a nice chap.

Best thing is I didn't feel such a bifter next to him either 😉
Think people put a lot of pressure on Barnes. He was top class for liverpool, but never did it for England despite plenty of opportunity. He wasn't that bad, but was never even close to how good he was for Liverpool, and his career came to an end at a low point for England. We'd just finished 4th in the world cup, graham Taylor takes over and we have a disastrous euro 92 and miss out on USA 94.
There are plenty of players that couldn't make the step up from club to international, but Barnes was one of the most disappointing.

Heskey does a holding job for England & it works well(does **** all for Villa though..).
Crouch has a great goals to games ratio,20 goals in 37 games.Why people always think he's rubbish is beyond me,he's big & lanky so what, he does the job he's meant to do...
Phil Neville wasn't the best,but Barnes was rubbish for England.Made all the worse because he was so good for Liverpool,even if he could just have found half of his club form for England he would have been raved about.....
See him all the time he lives around the corner. He is a porker.
