Is everything going downhill very fast, recession kinda over but its taking hell and high water to get somewhere. The job market is crap at the moment, any signs of improving and finding jobs for the unemployed which I reckon is like 4 million and so many people applying for the jobs. Employers should be maybe less picky. I got quite a bit of IT knowledge and had my own business, yet I still find it difficult to get a interview for say a IT Support vacancy. Supermarkets (been there) asda rejected = bad. So what to do.....
Feel for you mate. I think the biggest thing you need to remember is when the economy is as it is, if you do get any offer at all (shovelling sh1t) when it comes along, strongly consider taking the job to get back into employment. Even if it's part time, the contacts gained could lead to further full time opportunities?
Have you stayed in touch with your old work pals? What are they upto? Can they open any doors for you? A new venture might only be an email or a text away.

I think employers have taken the decision to be picky because they can, though I agree so many appear to have become oveercautious.
Also, there is no doubt a feeling that apparently over qualified people are using (supermarket) jobs as a stepping stone, for which the emplloyers just see future recruitment hassle.
Think about how you can change the appearaance of your skills, whether you can do so$mething different (volunteering) to make you stand out and keep your CV fresh.

Yeh the volunteering route is a good idea.
Few close friends of mine bought a 10 seater mini bus and started their own taxi firm last year after being axed by Avesta Steel in Sheffield and they're earning a small fortune these days.......can you drive? Just a thought.
Do you have a degree?
Find out if your local college (or if your really keen school) is fully staffed for next year. After 31 May teachers can't resigbn so now vacancies must be filled by new entrants to the proffesion (or re entrants). If you've got the right attitude and skill set we'll take graduates who aren't qualified teacers. You have to work towards a teaching qulification but you have 4 years I think to complete this.
WE thought we would be seeing graduates who haven't yet found work applying for posts this summer but so far we haven't

I'm sorry of this isn't relevant. If you haven't got a degree look at being a class room assisstant. My brother in law has just starrted in a school for students with behavioural problems. He's loving it and gets to do loads of stuff outdoors stuff with the kids.

Is this a short term thing to then move onto something else or is he looking at moving in the profession?
The reason i ask is because my other half is currently studying to become a nurse but she is currently on the look out for work of this nature (voluntary) work to put on her CV etc etc.

i have to agree im probably going to shetlan for a 3week stint then home for 1 week but its better than no job at all, i feel your pain been unemployed for a while now and any work would be good. To be fair if i was an employer id be taking my time to get the best value for money i could but that approach does make it difficult

Maybe because Andy Bond the ex Chief Executive cycling nut no longer has influence on who Asda employ? In Yesterday's Cycling Weekly there was a piece on him, in which he said "I look at someone who rides a bike for 8 miles in the pissing down rain to get to work as someone who will pull on their uniform and do a good job while at work!" or something along those lines. He only left in April too ..... seemed like an alright bloke actually .....

I am based in Bristol and I check volunteering (done before). I applied to asda twice as well and evans cycles (dont go there). I just try to milk the jobcentre for some course funding, to get more job prospects (electrical 17th reg). Maybe I am over-qualified for asda (retail, customer service, supervisor experience).
Just keep trying, but nowhere is kinda safe - public sector (no), engineering (no)......
Keep trying asda, they'll let you in eventually. Dunno if that's a good thing. But it's a job!

Daughters school is not recruiting and has just paid off 2 class room assistants and is not replacing afull time teaching post. + is still over budget for the year 😕

Keep going with ASDA and other supermarkets, my dad jacked in his job lecturing IT at the local college (says he couldn't deal with the stress of controlling little jumped up scrotes whilst money was being continually cut from his department) and got a job straight off there. Happiest i'd seen him in ages, he now has all the free time he wants and very little responsibility!
use the time to up skill mate
It's very difficult but u just need to keep plugging away at it.
Took me 6 months to get a job after being made redundant & that was through an old work colleague.
Have u looked into temporary contract work?
Hope something comes along soon.
I'm having similar problems just getting a job for the summer, as I am a student no one is interested, even agencies that specialise in temporary jobs!! Very bizarre...

Bit cheesed off with the engineering / construction market at the moment and my contract comes to an end in a bit
It seems like the electrical qualifications I spent 4 years at college attaining are being handed out willy nilly on short term courses at the moment - look into it.
I worked up from the tools to a well paid Contract Managers position, but due to untold stress took redundancy when offered.
I set up on my own in January back on the tools and haven't had a day off since due to lack of work. I'm currently making £300+ per day - not all profit mind, as overheads/running costs have to come out of that.
Want to be a trainee tax accountant? A friend's company has a vacancy which nobody has applied for (in months!!).

Don't know about lack of jobs but we recently advertised two positions in my team. We got about 50 applications and offered 30 interviews and only 7 people bothered turning up 😕
