One more here. I was made redundant last Spring, but have had some contract stints to keep me going and haven't had to touch the redundancy pay (yet).

Have any of you guys claimed jobseekers allowance? I've seen on the govt site it is reduced if you have savings and at a certain level of saving it's not available. How do they check? If someone opened an account in their child's name & put some cash there would they class that as part of the claimants savings?

On the process/engineering side, I have mate who works for Mane and although business is less he still has positions to fill - might be worth a punt, And no it's not me and I'm not on any commission for them either 🙂

Is it fraud? Surely I can put whatever funds I want in my child's account? What is to stop anyone paying a chunk off their mortgage and later on increasing the loan to get the funds back?

They mention "savings" but there seems to be no real definition, so could I withdraw funds & keep them under my bed; buy gold; buy stock etc and they won't be classed as savings but still be an asset, just like any of my shareholdings.

Since I've been made redundant I've sold one of my classic cars to get funds, put 2 of my bikes up for sale, sold some bits here etc.

As others have found out, the PPI we've contributed to for years have declined to payout because we found short term contracts to tide us over. If necessary I'd rather stack shelves for 10 hrs a week at the minimum wage than claim JSA. It seems those of us that make provisions for these situations are then disadvantaged when the rainy day arrives.

Me too, finish on the 27th this month. I actually took voluntary, as the job was doing my head in. Redundancy payment should last about 18 months, so hopefully will have time to sort something out!
I make powder coatings, and don't want to make any more!

Things I might sell if it gets bad:

Toyota Prius (on account of it being expensive, but I would miss it)
Orange 5
Er, that's it.

Triumph Spitfires aren't expensive to buy- they're not in the same league as a Bugatti! It was a hobby just like the bikes we have. It cost & was sold it for less than a lot of the bikes we ride. It's an example of what I'm trying to do to keep the cash coming in, no different to selling off bikes & parts.

FB-ATB - I take your point, but...

When you sign on they will ask you to provide 3 months worth of account details if you have significant savings, if you have moved money in order to increase your benefit they will simply refuse to pay you anything. Savings are considered income. Do a Google search and see the consequences of trying to defraud the state by shifting assets. I double dare you to try it. Over £6000 savings, you loose £1(weekly) per £250 above the £6K , maximum is £16000.

Ive got a couple of months notice to work but being as our pay has been 'erratic' over the last couple of months not holding out much hope of collecting the statutory redundancy pay without taking someone to court. Oh yes the baby is due in two weeks (no chance of paternity leave because the statutory pay is approx £100/week less than I'd get on jobseekers).
Spent several hundred quid, a large chunk of leave I've got remaining, & virtually all the emotional energy I can muster preparing for & traveling to job interviews for jobs that turn out to be conditional on the company getting work it has a 1 in 4 chance of getting and where they can't even be bothered to tell you whether or not your in the running if the work does turn up.

Looking on the bright side....

Richie_B - Best of luck, plenty of us in the same boat. I have an advert for a job just outside of architecture (in a conventional sense) you may be interested in, its a team leader role (think 10 - 15 years experience) with Amec. Way above my current experience level but it may be of interest to you. Post up your email and i will send it to you. When you get the job can i be your assistant? 😉

now wait a minute. Virtually everyone on this thread has posted about they're out of work.

Why are you posting on a mountain bike forum? Get out there and look for work. I'm paying you workshy fops to sit around talking crap. Go and scrub grafitti off bus shelters or count cars going round roundabouts.

Get out there and look for work.

Still at work for the next 6 weeks, after that - a morning trawl through jobserve.com doesn't take long, and you have to wait for people to get back to you. That's when you go out biking 🙂

MTT I supppose it's similar to treading the line between tax avoidance & evasion!
You can quadruple dare me, I'm not about to take the risk- it would end all chance of work in my profession. I'm just curious as I've never been in this situation. I'd guess if they saw a few £k withdrawn, they wouldn't believe it went on drugs & hookers. But if I decided to get a fancy Ti frame & kit it out with CK & XTR that would be alright!?

At the risk of sounding like a Daily Mail reader, you try to protect yourself and then find it works against you. But if you squander it all
then it's no problem.

I've been in discussion with my mortgage lender about making a capital repayment, but having access to further funding if needed. This could look like I'm reducing my savings but on the other hand I'm trying to reduce my monthly outlay.

Not yet, But I will be redundant sometime between 27th April and 24th Dec 2009. Just as soon as we've successfully transferred all of our machines, processes & jobs to the Czech Republic.

On the plus side our company has a very strong Ethics & Integrity policy - indeed in the US head office they have a whole department focussed on it. So when our savings are spent & the bank manager comes round to repossess the house at least I'll know I was f*cked over in an ethical manner

Process/manufactuing, Six sigma and Lean Engineer looking for something near Swindon

I'm in a similar position to you mate, though just up the road just north of Cheltenham actually. Anyway, there's LOADS of companies out there after LEAN consultants, and people with experience of Six Sigma I'd say. In these times it's when a lot of the bigger companies are putting more effort into making improvements, or face the consequences!

Anyway, I've got an interview with Industry Forum on Monday afternoon, have been in contact with Unipart (my old company, who do a LOT of CI stuff, and are based up the road in Oxford from you), a couple of companies in Bristol I am waiting to hear from etc. Don't know what level you're at (I've got about 3 years LEAN experience, both implementing and consulting, and am a Six Sigma Green Belt), but if you're more experienced or skilled than me, name your price it sounds like!

If you want any contact details of anyone, let me know, I still know lots of people within this industry.

I was made redundant in November, however I have tracked down a job and things are looking better.

AndyPaice, where abouts are you based, as I know of a geotech / environmental job in Devon / Somerset with a firm called Tweedie Evans, and the firm I work for may need a contract engineer up in Manchester for a SI we have up there

Neil. "

Cheers Neil, appreicate anything I can get at the moment. I'm on the west side of Sheffield about 30-40 min drive from Manchester ring road so thats a good location for me. Drop me an email on a_paice AT hotmail DOT com if you want a CV sending or to have a quick chat 🙂

cheers

Andy

I'm off at the end of March too. Ex Portman Building Society bod who has basically been working my redundancy notice since 11 September 2006 when the merger with the Nationwide was announced.

To top it off - I'm the project manager in charge of the transfer of the IT systems & data over to the Nationwide kit and it's basically finished now. My last goal on the overall project plan is to pack my bags 🙁

So anyone looking for a Bournemouth/Southampton based Project or Development manager specialising in Insurance with 20 years experience then give me a call...

Can a girlie join this exclusive club? No particular skills apart from organising STW Forum Rides, been involved in organising events, routes etc.

Am seriously considering starting up doing B & B for Swinley Forest plus guided rides, what do you reckon?

Welcome to the great unwashed I was binned on friday 13th (lucky for who)

Any jobs for electricians in the devon/ somerset area

I'd contact Gerber Juice. Things will have changed since I left there last September but they were expanding their factory and had engineering jobs I think.

I used to do a lot of work with Mitie (electrical) They are all over the south west. Seem like a decent company/group of people but I was a client.

Weismans (sp) were also building a new factory in Bridgwater so might be worth a shot.

Salesperson or Trainee Salesperson needed in the South West.

Are there any STW'er with repping sales experience or looking to get into repping as a trainee in the Soth East?

Experience in the gardening, water gardening trade would be an advantage.

Send me your CV and I'll forward it onto my boss.

hi all , this was an idea i was looking at, im a landrover tech , very shaky at the mo , so i looked around , for those who want , those that can , work abroad iraq .afganistan , in fact all over the world, the money is mad, and tax free, stupid me gave up my hgv 1 license last year , which means im no use to the millitary as a civillian contractor ( brakedown mechanic ) in afganistan, for me the risk was worth it money wise.i am also ex army, so being away in a hostile area is ok for me ,

Bloody hell - I posted a job on here about 2 years ago and got slagged off like mad. 'Why ya posting on here - go to a proper recruitment consultant blah, blah.' I had the piss taken out of me something rotten. Made me wary of even thinking about doing it again.

In my poorly paid small trade, outdoor sports types tend to be better, more motivated and more suited than 'big company' people.

Anyway, How times have changed and I'm sorry to hear from everyone who's been laid off - my wifes been with HBOS and it's predecessors for 15 years and is about to be made redundant.

I'd love to be able to help someone out who's been unfortunate enough to be laid off and I'd prefer someone of here than spending at fortune with some recruitment agency. Sorry recuiters 😉

I need a couple of despatch/delivery people based in Liverpool/Runcorn area for at least till september. Sorry, wage is not brilliant but it's a job. To pick stock and deliver around the UK with possible European work - D1 7.5 tonne licence needed.

I'm also POSSIBLY looking for a Sales Manager for Europe in a few months time - depending on response with other adverts out abroad.

We're a British company manufactuing specialist outdoor product from our North West base for the world market. Proud to say we're world leaders at what we do,bucking the trend and experiencing good growth.

PM me if your interested - if not, please don't slag me off like 2 years ago!!
