My laptop has a copy of XP on a now innaccesible hidden partition, so I cant restore the OS. Seeing as the laptop has the Genuine Windows barcode licence sticker thing on it, can I simply use any copy of XP, & authorise it with the code from the sticker ? Would this work ?
Seems unfair having to buy a new retail copy when I still effectively have the licence for the old one. 😐

Anyone ?

a) you'll need to have an OEM copy of XP, not a retail one, the product keys are different. You'll also have to match editions (Home / Pro).

b) you might need to ring Microsoft to activate it, and last time I was in exactly this position they were arsey with me over using a 'backup' disc and wouldn't do it.

What's the make / model of the laptop? Why's the recovery partition not working?

Something happened ovet the weekend. Managed to get Windows back but looks like partition is damaged. Won't run from ctrl & f11 command. It's Dell Inspiron 6000.
