MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Right, just had a slightly confusing conversation with my 80 year old dad.
Apparently his AOL email account has been hacked, and they have changed his password so he can't access his emails.
He didn't know what to do so contacted his broadband provider, TalkTalk, who gave him a number for AOL. He rang the number and was told they could fix it for him for £80, or give him uprated protection for £130.
Alarm bells rang at that point and he didn't hand over his credit card details as he couldn't see why he'd need to pay to get his account/password sorted out.
Anyone any ideas on this? Seems unlikely his phone and email provider are ganging up on him, or hackers have taken over their helpline number, but luckily he has just enough marbles left to query it before handing over credit card details.
Hope someone can shed some light on it for us
Thanks
Surely there is some online way of changing your AOL email account? Try Googling "aol email account password reset".
Good on him for not handing over any details. Not sure my similarly-aged grandparents would have sussed that out.
Where did he get the Talktalk support number from?
I'm sure AOL will have a "trouble logging in" link on the sign in page, using a sign in email, recovery email/phone number/similar. That'd be my first stop. You may have to pay for live support, unless you are a paid subscriber (very common these days), which may be the phone number he got from talktalk If the "trouble logging in" link/page doesn't get you a password reset email or text then the person who has taken over the account has changed those also. In that case I'd be contacting AOL security sharpish
