We had a close shave this week when our offices were broken into and HD's stolen... luckily they didn't go near the server or its backup devices. But it made us quickly aware we have no off site backup.

Can anyone recommend a Cloud storage company that are competitive and reliable ?

thanks.

If you have two offices (or someone with fast home broadband) you could buy two QNAP NAS systems and set them replicate files/directories between them.

You would have two copies of the data and no ongoing fees after the initial investment.

For further security you could also replicate the data to Amazon S3 or Elephant Drive

Link below has more details

Mozy Pro are proving pretty good for backing up one of our sites.

Don't forget you'll need a decent upload capacity to make it a goer, our site has a 10Mb fibre line and still took a good few weeks to perform the initial sync of around 350Gb.

Is it for backing up a number of PC's or one server? Cloud backup falls into roughly two categories:

1) One device, unlimited storage (generally doesn't work on server operating systems though)
2) Multiple devices, charged per Gigabyte.

Cloud backup is all well and good if you have sufficient upload bandwidth to the internet. If you have a lot of data, or your data changes frequently, it might not be uploading to cloud quick enough. Plus if it's for all your desktops and laptops, remember that whilst most software will allow you to set bandwidth throttles ... it doesn't take into account other users on the same network. Thus your uplink could quickly become saturated.

Is it worth having a tape backup solution, and then just taking tapes offsite once a week? It's a tried and tested solution! For example, run a full backup on a Thursday night, Take the tapes home on Friday. Then Friday's backup is kept onsite.

Otherwise if you're looking at Cloud, then as mentioned you have:
Amazon S3 - Which is awesome.
SpiderOak - I've used before and was brilliant.

Others that get varying reviews:
Mozy, Backblaze, etc

I doubt that'll be 40Mb upstream though...

The only issue we have with Tapes is that were not quite the size to have a full time IT person, so our IT is supported by outside company, and no one in office is quite up to / knowledgeable enough to perform it.

Although I'm thinking of just getting another set of HD's and rotating the backup hard drives once a month off site.

Once you outside company setup a tape drive & appropriate software, all you need to do is change tape daily & store them offsite (bosses house - though somewhere hey can be got from in a hurry is useful[especially if your boss travels a lot]). No training required, other than showing you where the eject button is...
