working on and mainly under my old vw van the last few weeks my old p7 torch, bought years and years ago after reading about them on stw, has been indispensable... and as its sat next to me now charging i'm looking at it wondering with the advances in torch technology whether anyone could recommend a newer version to succeed it?

They're great torches tbh- good size, good beam. The lumen wars have mostly made for less good torches with stupendous power and range but more Tactics, which isn't really that useful. My last one is dying 🙁

I picked up a couple of very cheap xpe torches that take the smaller 14500 (aa sized) lipos, they're very pocketable, easier to hold in my mouth or similiar, not as bright but still great for most purposes. Not going to recommend my exact model just because I don't know if there's better or not, I've not tried any others.

But for car stuff, worth getting a work light tbh!

In terms of LEDs, the XM-L2 is a good bet.
Which brand I'd buy from these days is a different matter.

Does your current one just use a single 18650 cell?

Agree with Northwind that under cars, a narrow-beam torch isn't as good as a wide spread work light.

One way in which you can improve on the P7 is by going for a neutral white LED - I much prefer these.

CZ to the forum!

(We could use one of his torches as a bat-signal.)

I picked up one of those led work lights from lidl or aldi, not painfully bright but it was great for changing a car wheel in a dark car park.
