😉
I can think of other things I'd have as a ring tone before Maggie...
You can probably get a ringtone featuring the screams of the crew of the Belgrano if you're a big Th*tcher fan.
There was an attempt to nickname the pound coin as a "Thatcher" - 'cos its thick, brassy and thinks its a sovereign
Best nickname for Maggie was one attributed to Bernard Ingham. Apparently he called her "Daggers" Some one asked him whether it referred to looking daggers at some-one? "No", he replied "it's short for Dagenham." when it was obvious they didn't understand, he explained "The tube line?" "Dagenham is one stop down from Barking..."
The "lady's not for turning" ringtone made realise that is probably Thatcher's most famous quote.
Bearing in mind all the famous great quotes, made by famous statesmen throughout history,
Thatcher's most famous quote, simply emphasises what an intellectual pygmy the soppy tart really was.
And i'd argue that Winston Churchill's wartime quotes can't be attributed to his conservatism as he was part of a wartime government of all the parties.
But then I'm a pedant.
I thought it was "there's no such thing as society"? Or is that just the one which is taken out of context the most?
"The lady's not for turning" is a rubbish quote anyway (more like soundbite, hence why it's been picked as a ringtone I guess), as it misses the previous sentence which is the more important part of the quote if anything!
If your phone went, and instead of ringing it said "A consensus politician is someone who does something that he doesn't believe is right because it keeps people quiet when he does it" in John Major's vice then (A) people would think you were quite peculiar; and (B) you would often miss calls.
You could alternatviely have "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" - I'm sure the scally who nicks your phone will appreciate that.
more like soundbite
Well it wasn't a soundbite ....... it was a written speech delivered from the rostrum at conference.
"There's no such thing as society" is indeed a famous quote by Thatcher, but probably because it is so often repeated by left-wingers like me.
I suspect that it is also the quote by Thatcher, which the Tories most want to forget.
I think we can safely assume that the only people that would have Maggie and/or Major as a ringtone would be deeply blue Tories, and even then, they'd probably only ever tell their other deeply blue mates about it...wouldn't they?
And i'd argue that Winston Churchill's wartime quotes can't be attributed to his conservatism as he was part of a wartime government of all the parties.
At least Churchill wrote all his own speeches and knew how to work a crowd. I'll admit he was a populist and a plagiarist, but could you see Chamberlain or Bevan or Morrison producing the inspiration that he did?
My favourite of his is the one to the Canadian parliament referring to the early days of the war when the French generals had made some comment about England being a chicken whose neck was about to get wrung.
"Some chicken ........ some neck!"
Of course, in context;
They are casting their problems at society. And, you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look after themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours
It's somewhat different.
However, why the blinking flip anyone would want her on their mobile is beyond me! Then again, why the blinking flip anyone would want a phone which made any noise other than a simple ring is also beyond me!
It's somewhat different.
How is it 'somewhat different' ? 😕
And why doesn't David Cameron go around the country reminding people that
"there's no such thing as society" ?
He can add the bit "no government can do anything" ..... if you like.
Now, now CFH, don't go putting it into context, that changes it somewhat.
Someone let me know when I can download her death rattle. I'd buy that.
Aaaaw, Cant we have some ringtones for the Labourites round here?
Hows about Harold Wilson: "One man's wage increase is another man's price increase."
Tony Blair: “The threat from Saddam Hussein and weapons of mass destruction - chemical, biological, potentially nuclear weapons capability - that threat is real.”
Tony again: “Mine is the first generation able to contemplate the possibility that we may live our entire lives without going to war or sending our children to war."
or Maybe Gordon:"We not only saved the world!"
that changes it somewhat.
So what context did you previously think it was in sooty ?
I thought everyone understood exactly what she meant, ie : there is no such thing as society - only individuals.
It has always appeared pretty clear to me, I can't see how anyone might have thought that she meant something completely different.
😕
What about Browns "end to boom and bust"
Polyphonic of screaming Iraqi kids ?
How about John Major saying
"ooooohh Edwina"
Aaaaw, Cant we have some ringtones for the Labourites round here?
Recording of a roadside bomb going off, followed by screaming?
