2. The US embassy in Damascus has urged US citizens to leave the country "immediately";
3. The US aircraft carrier CVN 77 George H.W. Bush is being moved from the Straits of Hormuz up to the eastern end of the Med;
4. The Turkish foreign ministry is urging Turkish pilgrims to return home from Saudi Arabia and avoid travelling through Syria.

If you think the other Arab Spring countries were a Pandora's Box, wait until someone takes the lid off Syria. It is a country riven with tensions that are being held down by the régime; the apparatus of state suppression runs deep inside Syrian society and is going to be extremely difficult to root out.
