There looks to be a lot happening in that part of the world at the moment:

1. A no fly zone is going to be instituted shortly by the Arab League (aided by Europe and the US);
2. The US embassy in Damascus has urged US citizens to leave the country "immediately";
3. The US aircraft carrier CVN 77 George H.W. Bush is being moved from the Straits of Hormuz up to the eastern end of the Med;
4. The Turkish foreign ministry is urging Turkish pilgrims to return home from Saudi Arabia and avoid travelling through Syria.

It was probably making jumpers for suicide bombers. Israel saw the end looming. They had wmd - weavers of mass destruction.

If you think the other Arab Spring countries were a Pandora's Box, wait until someone takes the lid off Syria. It is a country riven with tensions that are being held down by the régime; the apparatus of state suppression runs deep inside Syrian society and is going to be extremely difficult to root out. Once that happens there will be some old and very festering scores to be settled, for example the [url= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hama_massacre ]slaughter of thousands of Hama residents in 1982.
