LOL ^^
Aracer - you're neglecting to use context in your argument. No one is saying that a chink of armour should be abolished from the dictionary
CM and now Tom (though I'm now wondering if there is any difference...) appear to think the word should be banned. For all uses, because one very minor one (which doesn't ever seem to be used on here) is offensive.
Isn't "Nip" just a truncation of "Nippon"?
Interesting, and as Britons don't mind being referred to as Brits, are Nippons offended by Nip?
Confused.
Must be a context thing again.
Apologies aracer - I didn't have enough context to hand.

Just as Cougar was trying to explain, much, much, very, much earlier.

Would you use the term ****ly?
Nope. I have no idea what it is and it's not in the OED. And I've already said that I agreed with CM that the N-word seems like a reasonable candidate for the swear filter as it doesn't really seem to have any alternative non-offensive meanings.
Aracer - you're neglecting to use context in your argument. No one is saying that a chink of armour should be abolished from the dictionary
Charlie is suggesting it should be added to the swear filter regardless of meaning or context and Tom seems to agree.

You say that but ... aaahhh .... yesss .... in fact you're correct.

I sometimes go for an Indian, although the restaurant is actually owned and run by people from Bangladesh.
Did you mean niggardly? A word that can be traced back to the middle ages and has nothing at all to do with the word ****?Would you use the term ****ly?

Where do you people get the stamina for this bullshit?
Are you on performance enhancing drugs or something?
No I'm asking whether Graham would excuse the term "****y" being invented or used to describe food from say a pan-african restaurant.
Because in regards to the original argument, he seems to think that it is acceptable to excuse chink in this context despite it being used in it's racial form - to describe food and not its other meanings.
Also, I see as a group - to defend your position - you are now posting pictures that are borderline.
Context again but I feel indifferent to the variety of things I could be called, or at least a lot less bothered than I am about what people call other races.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_names_for_the_British
Also, the word was on its way to extinction until the influx of Chinese immigrants to the USA.
I think we should go for Chinese, but for the love of God please don't order prawn crackers or we'll be back at square one.

Where did I say that exactly?
Pretty sure I posted OED links agreeing with CM that "Chinky" was offensive.
Its not a term I would use these days and neither would I use your theoretical term "****ly".
Also, I see as a group - to defend your position - you are now posting pictures that are borderline.
What "group"? I find juanghia's picture very "borderline" too. I toyed with reporting it.
You seem to be convinced there is a "them and us" where everyone is a racist except you.
And that's the thing, when you expect everyone to be racist you start assuming the worst: like thinking that everyone using the word "chink" must be doing so to be offensive even when they are clearly using it in a non-racial manner.
So the term being used for chinese food is offensive, cheers for clearing that up Graham. I must have missed it.
Would you also agree, that considering googles data, that there is a good possibility that the most common use of the term by far - is a racial one?

Confirmation bias, anyone?
I didn't say definately did I, a cursory loom shows that line quite clearly elevates in the late 19th century and climbs until the tun up to the war when China was considered an ally - and then spikes again around the time of the US 1990s race riots.
Compare the usage of Jap and Chink and the war timeline.

Worldwide usage across the internet, a place where almost every comment section quickly dissolves into offensive attacks of one form or another?
Yeah I could probably believe that, though I don't think that evidence is compelling on its own.
Would you agree with the more civilised OED data that shows a current frequency band of 4 for the derogatory definition - i.e. the same as the "fissure" and "sharp sound" definitions?
Add chinky to it and you get a slightly increasing trend line in the 20s and then nothing in the 70s when chinese resteraunts boomed - so a lot of you are wrong in regards to the etymology of the "chinky" variant.
They had the internet in the 19th century?
Oh wow.

LOL.
Isn't that worldwide books though Tom - not necessarily any link to slang local uk usage.
(oh god I can't believe I've posted in this mess)
Anyway - this thread has passed into that space where people are arguing with points that nobody made, just so they can appear to be 'right'.
I don't think CM ever actually argued that 'chink' should be added to the filter - just 'chinky', as that doesn't seem to have dual use.
I don't think it's necessary due to lack of use/not leading to a general decay of the language used in the forum.
I cant really be arsed to design and run a regression analysis on this....but I will take a wild guess and say that there is a relationship between the drop in the use of the word Chink and the increase in the use of Jap.
I don't think CM ever actually argued that 'chink' should be added to the filter - just 'chinky', as that doesn't seem to have dual use.
Have you not read the whole thread (this is only a couple of pages back)
I would be happy to see Chink and Chinky banned, because of their racially charged meaning, might a consequence of that was that there was one less word to describe a small gap, then that would be an acceptable loss
hmmm - that's in contradiction to other statements he made. Obviously nothing is going to be done.
He's said the same or similar things multiple times - I'm curious what makes you think otherwise as he's been very consistent on that point, I don't think I've ever seen him suggest that chinky should be banned but not chink.

Pretty sure he did:

...
We can't talk about a chink of light, as we often do. But currently we can't talk about how I'd like to **** someone for talking like a ****
...
Trying to demonstrate that adding chink to the swear filter might be a helpful thing and demonstrate some commitment to restrict the use of racist terminology..
(and various other posts that I can't be bothered digging up)
hmmm - that's in contradiction to other statements he made.
He has variously stated that meaning and intent don't matter and also that they do.
So we're now on page 20, we've beaten mumsnet, can we stop now?

Yep. Make sure you clean up, though.

Could it be that all your years on this Forum in addition to the passing of time, in general, has changed you and your opinion on these threads?
Or perhaps you're just stuck to the carpet at the moment.
