Is it really so much better that the previous versions? My finger has been hovering over the buy it now button (contract) for an iphone 4 for a few days. But I've just been given a supposedly broken 3G with a smashed screen. A £12 new screen from ebay, a bit of a fiddle, a jailbreak and an unlock later and I've got a shiny 3G thats all happy again - £12 total cost to me.

But is the iphone 4 so much better that I could justify giving this one to my wife and getting a new one or should I just use this one myself on a £15pm sim only monthly rolling contract and save a few bob? Decisions, decisions.

I broke my 3G, hence the new one. It's not very broken tho, so the bits are on order and it'll shortly be my wifes...

I tried facetime out the other day, was quite good I thought, if nothing else there's certainly an 'adult' hotline market for it!

I have a 3GS my Bro who is Mr anti mobiles bought a iPhone 4 he loves it, tried and yes very nice faster, lovely display. I can get it to drop the signal by holding it on the 'wrong' spot but I've had that on other phones too.

I bought a dead 3G (8Gb) on Ebay and fixed it - My first iPhone.

I'm currently on O2's iPhone SIM only £15 (12 month contract) and very happy.

I was very very very tempted to sell it for a profit and get the iPhone4, but when I dislocated my knee and landed on the phone I realised that I was much happier to have gouged/scratched a 2nd hand phone that a bling new one.

I'd love to have multitasking, but that would mean a 3GS or iPhone4.

For me, it comes down to pennies saved, once the initial want want want want fever has passed.

I've played with the iPhone4 in-store and they are nice, but maybe in a year or so.....

Drac - but would the difference between the two be worth circa £500 over two years to you?

8gb to 32gb would mean not farting about managing which music/podcasts/films were on it too I guess. The length of time this battery lasts on this one could wind me up too. Can you tell I'm trying to talkmyself into it!

Isaac - very wise words - I need to heed them!

Multitasking - if you upgrade the operating system to os4 then jailbreak it with redsn0w you get the option to have a 3g multitasking during the jailbreak. Does not seem too slow, but then again I've got nothing to compare it to.

Hmmm! Lot of cash but the difference between the 3G and 4 is huge so yes if you can spare the case but still costly.

A work colleague's got one, along with an ipad and an iphone 3gs.
The iphone's 4 display goes white if you press on the upper half, and the ipad home button failed after 45 minutes of use, but apart from that they've been great!

The iPhone 4's screen is faultless, having the extra memory, both RAM and storage means it doesn't hang up and stop displaying photos after long 'net sessions, the GPS is much faster at acquiring satellite lock-on, and is more accurate. Viewranger is fantastic with the hi-res screen, the camera is lovely and really easy to use. Oh, and mine doesn't drop calls, although, to be fair I do have a case to protect the glass back and the sides from chipping. Great phone and pocket computer, I loved my 3G, but the 4 is a whole new ball-game.

I'm thinking three - comparisons

I rarely go anywhere near big cities and Three's 3g coverage seems a little better in the sticks - or at least as good as Orange....

Having had Android and WinMo devices for the last 3 years, I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my shiny new iPhone 4 in the next few hours.

It probably helps that I've recently bought a MBP and have started using this to manage all my personal "stuff" (which can sync with my iPhone). That, and the strength of the App Store has done it for me.

Nope Tesco is on O2 so exactly what I'm on now. And nope Tesco is cheaper as it's on a 12 month contract and can drop onto SIM only so over 18 months or 24 it works out way cheaper.

I did the maths and three works out a lot cheaper than Tesco assuming you are planning on using the phone for at least 2 years:-

Assume Iphone4 32Gb

Tesco -> £429 purchase + 12 X £20 for initial contract + 12 X £15 cheapest iphone sim only contract for remaining 12months = £849

Three -> £189 purchase + 24 X £30 for 24 month contract = £769 - £64 if you buy contract by accessing site through quido co = £705.

It's the same for the 16gb version too. You are tied to a longer contract which could be bad news if you destroy your phone in the first few months, but you don't need to find a big lump of cash at the beginning either.

Its a moot point for me as around the area I live O2's 3g service is so poor most original iphoners struggled to justify the ownership so the tesco offering using O2 is not worth using.

I've done a bit of comparison between my 3GS and my sis's 4

The biggest differences are the screen - the 4's screen really is much sharper - to the point that you can't really see the pixels. Of course that doesn't really affect the experience that much but it is very nice. Second, the camera is better though again, not so much that I'd really change for that alone, especially as my pics are snaps rather than photos (if you get what I mean) though the 'flash' is useful.

So at the moment, I don't see any reason to upgrade. We'll see what the 5 is like next year maybe but I reckon that with OS4.0 now doing multitasking on the 3GS that covers the only major issue I had with it (other than battery life I guess).

the jump from 3G to 4 was huge but I doubt I'd have upgraded if I had the 3GS.

it'll be the same when the 5 comes out, it wont be worth me upgrading from the 4 so I'll wait until the 6.

You see, I really need the new one as I can hardly see what I'm typing!

Actually - more doom and gloom - I installed an app called btstack gps through cydia (jailbreak app)last night so I can now use an external bluetooth gps with the 3g rather than the battery hungry internal one. Used alongside memory map with the iphone in flight mode (who wants a call when you are riding) and the external GPS taking the battery strain I managed a 2hr ride with the phone tracking my every move in sleep mode whilst in my pocket getting it out every now and again to check the route and used less the 10% of the battery capacity. Reasons to spend more running out fast 😀

Mmm that's quite impressive.

I use the MotionX GPS app which can still record a route while in the background or in standby. Battery life is considerably better than having it in the foreground with the screen on, but probably not that good.

I discovered an unexpected bonus on the 4 vs. the 3 - the LED flash makes a passable torch for stumbling home from the pub. Far better than the screen torch that the app used on my old 3GS...

Sorry but I need a phone to make calls on business, family, people abroad, Skype, internet and aGPS and some of the useful functions do help but if the signal kept dropping out on my current moby I would either get it fixed on warranty or forced to buy a new mobile.

I would gladly buy an Apple iphone4G if it did not have signal issues and I don't care how cool it looks or its an iphone...I want a phone that works-Apple please fix the production phones!

If HTC Desire has bad reception -it wouldn't sell or would it?

Do you live in America? Do you have AT&T as your network? No? Then you're a half-wit who believes a load of media generated garbage and FUD, designed to lower Apple's share prices so that hedge-fund parasites can reap large profits when the share price goes up. There are no call dropping issues in the UK because the iPhone is shared across multiple networks. In the States there is one network that struggles in large cities like SF, LA, NY, Chicago, because of the heavy data usage by iPhone users. My iPhone 4 happily streams 6Music on Tuneit Radio even when there are no bars showing, so a phone call has no issues, unless, of course you're somewhere where there's no signal at all...

i got a 32gig iphone 4 on 3 last week

1st iphone but I have an ipod touch already

it is very nice - I can't seem to recreate the signal drop issue without a bumper. I am using the bumper though cos it feels a bit like holding a bar of soap without it.

A big draw for me was the camera and video camera (as I never remember to take stand alone cameras and video cameras out with me, and I want just one device in my pocket) - I am very pleased with both

3 have customer service issues - but IME the coverage is very good (and getting better as they are soon sharing network with vodaphone). Their prices for iPhone 4 seem like the best available to me. Only issue is I think they are only giving them to existing customers who are due an upgrade right now

Erm.. I agree there was far more hype about this than it warranted, but you do know that even Apple admitted that it does drop more calls than previous versions?

Of course if you do use a case then there is no issue and it actually has much better reception than previous versions.

i'm not up to speed on the latest and greatest, but spent a couple of days in North Wales with someone who has an iphone 4, we're both on the same network - but they couldn't make any calls as they couldn't get any signal, my phone (cheap and cheerfull) had no problems

no idea if this is limited to the iphone, but guess if your not in a city centre, they aint much cop?

since spoke to someone else, who's out and about a lot - they love their iphone 4, but have another cheapo phone to make calls on

Well I went into a Apple store where the demo phone dropped signal till the guy put a bumper on and I have never had a signal drop on the same UK network but at least his own personal 3GS was working alright.

I like Apple and own a Macbook and a new Mac Pro and have spent ££££s but I still won't buy ANY phone that has reception issues from NEW where other phones work fine. I'll wait till the 5G comes out.

I've never had to a buy case for any of my phones so why should I use a bumper? you guys enjoy your faulty phone. 😆

Other phones don't work fine. Many others have similar reception problems - though the iPhone 4 is slightly worse.

But are you saying if the phone had been designed with a bumper as an integral part then you would have bought one, but coming with one as a seperate part means you won't consider it?

Trust me, I am in no way an Apple fanboi, but I decided last week to take the iPhone 4 plunge (due to the strength of its App Store, especially productivity apps like Omnifocus etc). And my shiny new 4 arrived this morning > spent most of the day setting it up > and I have no reception issues whatsoever. I'll still be claiming my free case, but as a piece of hardware, the iPhone 4 cannot be beaten (IMO). And I've had years of WinMo and Android, so I'm not new to this game.

My concensus is that a bad batch of 4's got out and those that received them quite rightly complained. However, anyone owning a 4 IMO should respect the quality of its build and finish and use a case of some kind ... which means all those in receipt of a dodgy 4 should accept Apple's gesture of a free case (of which there's a choice of about 6-7) and just get on with it, because 1) they won't have a reception problem anymore, and 2) they'll be protecting their phone as well. The only problem I know of is that some people have reported the signal returning byt wifi disappearing ...

the whole signal loss thing seems to be a bit out of proportion. Apple is getting a pasting, but I think that is largely due to the fact they are very good at blowing their own trumpet. So certain people are happy to put the boot in when they get the opportunity.
You look at the 1st nokia N95 a great idea, but an absolutely terrible phone. In the past most of nokia's new handsets just didn't work. They would shutdown regularly, the battery wasn't up to the job, keypads would fall apart in a matter of months. How many times would you ring up customer services for your network to be told "it was a known issue, we'll send out your replacement today", but there was never this much fuss, because nobody really cared.

iPhones are great.

My mate has an x10 mini, another still has the n95, I can certainly say that the reception on my iphone 4 is better and also the battery life is too, when using them a lot.

Yea the battery life aint that great with the iPhone 4, but its also a lot better than some others, if used the same.

BTW I use mine in a very low signal area, x10, n95 and a few others have to go into a certain place in the field to get reception, I get reception everywhere! But can make it drop by using the deathgrip for a minute, easy, don't hold it like that, or get a case or some tape.

So don't the phone people just send a free case out with the phone now? Or do you actually have to go and claim it from somewhere?

Gotta love apple marketing, i've noticed that when people post on non-iphone related subjects, they will often say such things "I'll post more details later from the PC, on on my iPhone...." going to the trouble of using the capital in the apple way.

I looked at the iphone and didn't think much of it. Personally, i think the apps are over rated, i have a ipod touch and i dont use it for anything else other than music. I'll play with a app for a bit, then forget about it.
