MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Without wishing to sound like a boring Apple Fanboi, I've been an iPhone user since the start. The first time I felt like they were forcing something I didn't want was when it came to replace my 5, with a 6. I've had a 6 now for just over 2 years, I've got used to it, but still not a fan of the larger size per se.
Was looking at upgrading to a 7, and no headphone port is a killer for me! Would mean upgrading to a bluetooth headunit in my van (plenty more bucks I don't want to spend) and also couldn't use my Sennheisers with it either. So, I'm afraid, I'm out...
But then just discovered the iPhone SE... That one seemingly went under my radar! Looks like all the good bits of the old 5/5S that I loved (size, shape, battery life etc.) with the much improved guts of a 6S (including processor, camera etc.), and all for relatively little money.
Anyone gone from a 6/6S to an SE and regretted it? Seems like a perfect combination of practical performance, without the flashy new case, and a cheaper price tag to match. In fact, whilst I can buy the 64GB version for £429 outright, I can get it on a 500MB and 300min (I'm on Wifi most of the time and barely actually use a phone as a phone for making calls to be fair) for just £9.99 and £20 per month, a total cost of just £489.99 over 2 years! Seems a no brainer to me...
The 7 does come with a dongle thing that lets you use ordinary headphones (therefore I assume you'd be able to plug into your car stereo)

Something else to get lost (and I will lose it I guarantee) and more faff than it's worth. Also I'm just not that sold on the 7's new features anyway, just seems an awful lot of money to me for not very much!
Got a 6 and an SE for work. I find the SE to be that bit too small for browsing the net which I do all the time on my 6, so it's probably just what I'm accustomed to. The SE is just as quick as the 6 as it shares the same processor and so on and it's really compact and light, so light I often think I've forgotten it.
Just leave the converter attached to the headphones, buy a second one for the car ?
Personally I could not go back to the smaller screens but as I am considering the Plus size when I go to the 8 I appreciate we have different preferences,
ive an SE and prefer the smaller size screen, its perfectly fine for browsing and youtube etc and fits in yr pocket much better..
my son has the 6 and i prefer mine over his

That's what I was typing… wise words.
= ;87)
Personally, I still prefer the smaller SE/5 form factor, but headphone socket shouldn't really be a deal breaker for anyone.
I was looking at an SE today as a potential replacement for my 5. Basically a 6S in a 5 chassis but without the touch sensitive screen and without a barometer so less accurate on the tracking apps.
I might just rough it with my 5 for another year and get a 7S. The lack of headphone jack is something that has been blown out of all proportion I think. The only downside is you can't charge and listen to music with plug-in headphones at the same time, but that is what blue tooth is for. You can get blue tooth dongle to 3.5 jacks cheap enough for your car so no need to replace your head unit.
Not as a downgrade, but my wife and I both recently bought SEs for ourselves. Can be had for about 310-330 on ebay (64gb) in nearly new condition (what we did). Obviously the iphone of choice for anyone who likes the easily pocketable size. I didn't find a competitive android offering either.
Battery on my se lasts 2 days!
It's solid chassis, fits in pocket nicely and does everything I need. "Cheaper" but with all features you need and a lot you don't - Siri I'm looking at you.
Agree about headphones - can't remember last time I used 3.5 jack - it's a dust hole.
I have an se- I really like it - I don't want a big phone so it's perfect. Does everything i want it to anyway!
Another SE owner here - I decided that once you accounted for an otterbox case to handle dropping it by accident or similar, then anything else was mahoosive.
Camera is great, works great as a phone, OSmaps app works brilliantly on it with downloaded maps, perfect (though I'll always want better battery life)
It's not a downgrade the SE has the same processor etc as the 6S, the battery life is much better too. I switched from a 6S to an SE and the battery life was really good but i missed the screen size more than i though i would
The Mrs has an SE, I've got a 6. I may well get an SE when mine starts feeling its age. Unless the 7s or 8 is out by then.
Yeah, I went from a 6 plus to an SE. Love it.
Mind you, the 6 plus would be much less hassle now I have an Apple Watch.

I skipped the 6 & kept my 5s, I really wanted to get the SE as I like the size but because I have had to fight with phone companies before I opted for the 7 knowing that I could always "downgrade" to the SE if I wanted but i would be stuck with the SE if I wanted to go with the 7, it's not been the cumbersome behemoth I'd imagined & after few months I'm more than happy with it. I'm not a big user by any means but the battery will last me 2 days calls & emails with a few travel apps thrown in but no social media.
HTH.
I went from a ip6 to a SE. No regrets. Better size more robust screen. Better battery life. Easier to carry about, fits in my saddle bag. No regrets.
When my 5 finally dies, I'm totally getting a SE. Bigger screens are great and all that but pocketability trumps in my book.
I've got an se, don't like the feel or the size of the 6 and above. Had a 5s before hand and got
All sounds totally positive so far guys.
The only time I appreciate the screen size on my 6 is when surfing the net for extended periods. But I also have an iPad and a MacBookPro at home and an iMac at work, so that's not really an issue.
Used to be able to get my 5 alongside my wallet with no issues at all in the same pocket on all my jeans. The 6's extra bulk causes issues, and to be honest, none of the features it brought with it over the 5 I've found useful at all!
Having also just found out the SE has the more powerful A9 processor with 2GB of RAM so will be usefully faster than my 6, and a 12MP camera instead of the 8 on the 6 (couldn't give a stuff about the selfie camera, I'm not a teenage girl!), and it hasn't lost the Apple Pay feature either (found one thing I've liked about the 6 so far, there you go!)... It's a done deal!
Even better is the price... That £490 over 24 months is less than half what it would cost for me to get an iPhone 7 with similar contract! Might, as allthegear has suggested, splash out on an Apple Watch with the difference!
I decided to go for the iPhone SE due to the size and price. No regrets. The only downside is when internet browsing but the trade off is worth it.
Was thinking along the same lines when the SE came out. Dug out my old 5 and used it for a couple of days, nice to carry, didn't like the lower res screen and found typing harder on the smaller keyboard. Came to the conclusion that the regular 6/7 size is spot on for me.
It does depend on usage though, I'm often train commuting and since "my" old iPad is now the toddler entertaining device, my phone is my usual sofa-browsing thing too. If I was commuting by car or bike and using something else at home then an SE would probably be a better fit.
Giff gaff usually have them for £330-ish new
Good phone
yes,
loved my 5S, but the 16gb wasn't nearly enough, and it really atarted to hang at times.
could have got a 6s or 7, but the price put me off. The SE suits me perfectly. just the right size, cheap, fast, and 64gb. i actually pay less for this than i did for my 5s, by a tenner a month.
I went from a Nexus 5X to a iPhone SE, having previously had an iPhone 4s before. Nexus was a great phone when it worked, but I went through 3 warranty handsets in 7 months and rapidly got fed up. I also found it very cumbersome and difficult to use one handed, even with my spade sized fingers.
I thought about a 6/6s but couldn't justify the cost and didn't want one that big. iPhone SE is about spot on for size, but it's not the best device for browsing the web if that's your main phone use. On the plus side I can quite easily squeeze 2 days battery life with moderate use.
Worth bearing in mind the SE has a retina screen so better resolution and brighter than a 5 screen so might be ok going to a smaller screen that has better resolution. I'd need to see one I the flesh as I've got used to the size of my work issue 6 so going to my personal 5 for browsing is tough with my ageing eyes.

A week into iPhone SE ownership now... No regrets!
This thing is way faster than my 6 was, seemingly the jump in performance from the 5 to the 6 was very little (it was all about the screen size), but the jump from 6 to 6S (which the SE shares its processor and internal specs with) was massive! MUCH faster processor and twice as much RAM is very noticable.
And so is the smaller size again, in a good way! 2 and a bit years I had my 6, and every time I put it in my pocket I grumbled at the size. The SE is just like my old favourite iPhone 5! Only much quicker, much better battery life, much better camera (way better than on the iPhone 6 too) etc. OK so an iPhone 7 would have been even higher performance, but the same size as the 6, heavier, and a LOT more money! The SE is a bargain in my book... Very pleased so thanks for all the feedback guys. 😀
Interesting (6 owner here who has not bothered to upgrade). How is the performance noticeable - which apps ? I never feel I have to wait for the phone, certain paid add ons do make web pages load much faster though
How is the performance noticeable
Apps open quicker, less lag when going from one app to another, have multiple apps still open in the background has no affect on performance etc. And yes web pages open faster too. It generally just feels a lot slicker to use, which you might expect of it having a 30% faster processor and twice the RAM. The jump from the iPhone 5 (not the 5S) to the iPhone 6 yielded a mere 8% faster processor and the same amount of RAM, but a bigger screen...
I went to one from Iphone 4 think its great, faster and a size I like. Battery life great.
iPhone 7:
Get a cheap Bluetooth dongle receiver to plug into the car headphone socket? That way you still charge the phone. Or get the Apple converter as suggested.
The SE is nice if you liked the 5 size and don't need a phablet.
Using a 7 plus, never used the headphone socket and don't miss it. Using my phone as a phablet too.
