My iphone got totally drenched whilst out riding the other night (brompton puncture I couldn't fix, 5 mile walk home in torrential rain, altura mayhem jacket doesn't have waterproof pockets!!!!!).

I pay a few bob a month for accidental damage cover on my home insurance. Should I claim? What will happen to my premium if I do? Any other downsides?

The phone has been in a bag of rice for the last couple of days, it's still dead.

Do you have cover away from home? Accidental damage doesn't mean it will be covered away from home. If you have 'all risks' cover then you're likely covered.

If so it may be worth claiming. Will it go up next year? Yes. By how much, no idea.

You could do a couple of online quotes with your provider to work it out. With and without the claim and work out roughly what the difference is.

be careful of them saying it was negligence and refusing the claim.

Also many policies won't cover high risk items like smartphones.

An out of warranty repair (which covers anything as long as the phone is in one piece) is about £150 with Apple. You'll get an as-new refurbished model of the same capacity for a water damaged one.

If the cost on your insurance is even approaching that, with excess and declaring it in future years, I'd just pay for the Apple route.

I presume you've tried the 'leaving it in a jar of uncooked rice overnight' trick? Has worked for me and others.

Been in for the last three days. It's dead.

Might be worth putting it in the airing cupboard; it's been fairly cool lately, so it might need extra warmth to evaporate any remaining water.
That's assuming it's just been put in the rice at normal room temp.

Try apple - I took mine in after I killed it in a pocket in the rain. I was expecting to fork out 150 quid, instead they gave me a refurb replacement for free! ( I was totally honest about the water damage btw - they said they couldn't rule out a battery fault!)
