I was thinking about getting one because I heard you can get full UKHO marine charts for them for just £30.
I was thinking these iPads would be around £400-450, but for one with half decent capacity try £700!? WTF!?
Why can't Apple be less greedy and have things like a SD slot, or replaceable battery?
I guess the answer is that their products are only for stupid people - tech. ignorant fashion victims!
I'd have to get a decent netbook and Memorymap marine charts instead. This would save me a whopping £450, but end up with a far better specced bit of kit with vastly more storage, an SD card slot and which is vastly more flexible and compatible.
Now why did I even think of looking at Apple products?
I heard you can get full UKHO marine charts for them for just £30.
i doubt that. certainly not legitimate ones. Try £30 a chart...
That's more than my laptop cost and I can play pretty modern games on that too!
Other tablet/slate devices are available, at a variety of prices.
They may or may not be as shiny.

I've got a macbook which I use for programming in Java and web (PHP, javascript etc) and its the best piece of kit I've ever had. I don't think I'm stupid, but you obviously know better.

So you couldn't get a top spec Microsoft PC for 30% less and do the same thing on it?
Now why did I even think of looking at Apple products?
Because you hadn't defined your needs beforehand, and were (greedily) seduced by the tales of cheap maps?
Personally I love my iPad, and would not be as happy with a netbook, but hey, I must be a tech. ignorant fashion victim.
Very poor troll.
Luxury technology item in not cheap shocker. 🙄
So you couldn't get a top spec Microsoft PC for 30% less and do the same thing on it?
Stop trolling, if you want one buy one, if you dont then dont buy one, simples, if you can't afford one dont moan about it, simples ?
So you couldn't get a top spec Microsoft PC for 30% less and do the same thing on it?
Define "same thing".
Microsoft PCs don't run Mac OS X, so obviously the answer is "no".
I personally think that apple products such as Macbooks are priced about right for the hardware and software you get. I don't get on with OSX but I'd quite like to try one for a while to see how it is for coding, I also want to put that I've got experience doing that on my CV :p.
What Apple don't do is cater for the cheaper end of markets, not that I can blame them. If you could get people who just want to browse the net and listen to music to spend £700 on a way OTT piece of tech for that purpose then why bring out a lower end spec? (I'm talking about macbooks there not ipad and I'm not say that everyone who has a mac just browses the net either before anyone starts)
STW - where VFM is irrelevant
Sounds like it's the wrong product for you anyway.
jam bo - MemberI heard you can get full UKHO marine charts for them for just £30.

Reading an article in this month's Practical Boat Owner mag, someone is saying that he has compared the charts working on an iPad with his expensive dedicated chart plotter which accepts the same charts which come on a storage card and which cost around £160 each.
They had a response from the Apple store and the chart supplier which confirmed that the iPad product was a bit of a giveaway, but highighted that an iPad is of limited use as a chartplotter due to various factors.
the prices for an all sining and dancing one are stupid TBH, but i dont get why youd default to that option anyway. My parents have one and it gets heavy usage, but only for emails, games, internet forums and other little bits and pieces. You dont need daft ammounts of storage unless your going to use it away from you home PC (you have a PC/laptop anyway right?) and want to carry lots of movies/music on it. If its a home browsing tool, and thats its main use lets face it, then you dont need that sort of storage. Also, 3G? again, useful for a bit of on the move browsing but considering you need to pay a contract ontop of your phone and probably your home internet plus cost on device, not sure id bother.
welcome to Steve's walled garden 🙂
Doesn't your garden have walls, Simon?
Not trolling and, if I was mad enough, i could go and buy dozens of these.Stop trolling, if you want one buy one, if you dont then dont buy one, simples, if you can't afford one dont moan about it, simples ?
If they were a sensible price and a bit more flexible, I would buy one. I'm just exasperated at the disproportionate price.
I'm going to get a Compaq 311c Netbook as it has decent nVidia ION graphics performance with HDMI out, 100GB more storage than the largest iPad, 11" screen and great battery life. All for £240 (delivered).
admiralty charts are available for £15 each from Pisys marine. use them at work all the time.
So you couldn't get a top spec Microsoft PC for 30% less and do the same thing on it?
In a word, no. The open source programming tools you can get for the MAC OS are FAR superior to anything available on Windows OS. My macbook boots up in 30 seconds, My macbook has a multi gesture trackpad, which is one of the best things about it. My Macbook doesn't crash. I can edit videos for free on my macbook. I don't have to p*ss about with registry's on my macbook, I don't have to go through cr*ppy windows installers on my macbook.
so yeah, I'll happily pay 30% more as it makes my day to day life so much easier.
Compaq Mini 311c - 6 Cell Battery up to 6 Hours Life
And what about when it's actually turned on?
'SOTP'
😆
That is the best thing I have seen all week.
Writing this on a Macbook Pro that I have had for 4 years and it is still running fast and with very few issues. I do loads of Photoshop processing and speed is never an issue.
Would you get that with a PC? I was very sceptical when I first got a Mac and they certainly aren't perfect but to be fair they do last. Oh and if I wanted to sell this Macbook I would still get quite a few hundred pounds.
iPads are expensive but they work really well and more importantly unlike a netbook are always on. No need for waiting to boot, connect to the internet, explorer to open, etc, etc
It's because they're not designed as marine mapping devices - they're designed as lifestyle computing accessories.
Grow up.
The open source programming tools you can get for the MAC OS are FAR superior to anything available on Windows OS
I'm pretty dubious about that one
Why can't Apple be less greedy
because at that price they are only just keeping up with demand. Awesome piece of pricing really, welcome to the marketplace
I'm also no great Apple fan but this is the first piece of their kit that I could really go for. Pricey but seems to just work in an intuitive, no faff sort of way (at least for the playing I've done so far)
runs off to find cheque book
Doesn't your garden have walls, Simon?
I haven't got a garden 🙂
I heard you can get full UKHO marine charts for them for just £30.i doubt that. certainly not legitimate ones. Try £30 a chart...
The MemoryMap marine charts are only £40, and has exactly the same content as the one paper chart I own - along with another 800 odd charts I didn't already own the paper verisons of.
I'd have to get a decent netbook and Memorymap marine charts instead. This would save me a whopping £450, but end up with a far better specced bit of kit with vastly more storage, an SD card slot and which is vastly more flexible and compatible. Now why did I even think of looking at Apple products?
So it isn't for you, move on, choose something else. Steve Jobs will cope, you will be happy, where is the problem?
The main attraction is the quality of the screen anyway, you won't be getting anywhere near that on your netbook. Lots of photographers are using them for showing clients images etc on a very slick and professional looking way.
But it's so lo res!
I would be tempted by a 'retina display' ipad though...next year I reckon

I've never owned an Apple product before. I was intrigued by the iPad as a replacement for my 5 year old laptop. I spent a while thinking about what I intended my laptop to be used for when I bought it, and what it actually gets used for. Could I achieve that on a reasonably priced iPad? (£500 for 32Gb WiFi version)
It turns out I thought I could, so took a deep breath and tried something different, and the iPad is one of the best computing purchases I have ever made. Superb.
Im honoured, thank you! (no sarcasm meant or implied).
No seriously it was brilliant. Proper made me laugh, that did. Far more entertaining than whatever they're going on about on the rest of this thread. 🙂
Plus one for what Goon says I did exactly the same .
and like it lots.
might be even better when the V4 OS comes out .
will the thing work with a wireless printer .
I can edit videos for free on my macbook.
Your Macbook comes with bundled video editing software, but you have paid for it.
The open source programming tools you can get for the MAC OS are FAR superior to anything available on Windows OS
And they're even more superior on Linux/*BSD.... which runs on both your 'PC' and Macbook.
Still not convinced that Mac's are 'better' than PCs, since they share much of the same hardware design.
Oh, and you can run OSX on Windows, thanks to VMware (though it's not legal..)
will the thing work with a wireless printer
Depends. I have an HP wireless printer. They produce an app (I hate that term!) to print direct from (and scan to) the iPad.
Hey, at least when Android tablets come out, they'll be cheaper. Right, right?
Will they ****: - Samsung Galaxy Tab - £599 for 16GB.
Bloody hell - why do people feel they have to come on here and whine about the pricing of non-essential kit.
My iPad is probably about as justifiable price-wise as any of the expensive bikes I have: 5-Spot, Handjob, S-Works Roubaix. In each case, I could have bought something that would 'do the job' for anything up to 10% of the price. I didn't - instead I spent my hard earned wages/healthy inheritance on luxury bikes because I wanted to.
I have a MacBook Pro as a replacement for a Powerbook, which in turn replaced the last of a succession of Dells and Thinkpads, largely because OSX offered, at the time, a far superior user experience to Windows ME and early XP. If someone buys a modern laptop running Win 7 for half the price and tells me the user experience is great, that's brilliant. I have an iPad because I wanted one to play with and explore the possibilities for using this sort of kit. I don't need it, and I could certainly run my business without it, but I've chosen to buy it because I'm interested in the possibilities arising from this piece of tech. If you don't want one, or decide it doesn't fit your perception of value for money, why do you need to try and rationalise your decision by inferring that anyone who has a different perception is somehow intellectually inferior.
I'm not an apple fan. And I've never and don't own an apple product.
However, I'll say this... My mate got an iphone when they first arrived on the scene and I have to say I was instantly really impressed by it. His mate was given an ipad when they arrived on the scene (something to do with his work) and I was also really impressed with that.
Now I still don't own any apple product but the only reason for this is that I have 3 kids, a wife, mortgage etc etc etc so I can't afford one - well, I can't justify spending that much on one... But if the opertunity arose to get one (work phone maybe?) then I would be very happy.
Hey, at least when Android tablets come out, they'll be cheaper. Right, right? Will they ****: - Samsung Galaxy Tab - £599 for 16GB.
As far as I am aware, samsung haven't released any prices and that's just a guess from play.com.
I suspect they will actually be a fair bit cheaper, otherwise they won't be selling many!
ditch_jockey +1
Do the people whining about iPads ride around on Halford's bargains bikes?
Why not? They'll get you there. You'll have to fix it on the way, but it'll get you there. It won't be worth anything in a couple of years, but it'll still get you there.
So why buy those expensive bikes? Possibly because you have enough riding experience to see the advantage in something that works well and is reliable and holds its value.
Same with Apple products.
I personally think that apple products such as Macbooks are priced about right for the hardware
😆
Must be trolling!
edit, double post.

In the Claim Chowder folder.
But it's so lo res!

Lo res? Really? Compared to what, exactly. There is no chance of a Retina screen on the iPad until processors get a lot faster for this class of device, and nobody even manufactures such a thing. Chances are you'd never notice the difference anyway. There's been lots of chatter about it on various forums, and the consensus is not for some time, and who cares when the iPad works as well as it does.
Going back to points in the OP, you can get a dock card reader that allows you to copy to and from an SD card, I believe SDXC spec, so you can go up to 64Gb. If you don't mind spending over £600 for the card. And you're bitching about the cost of an iPad?
Also 7Dayshop sell neat little batteries for charging iPhones and Pads via the dock for around £7. Who needs all the hastle of buying expensive proprietory batteries when £14 buys you two little external batteries that you can charge from your USB and stick in your pocket just in case. Getting a couple for the phone, although I've not needed one since getting the 4G, the 3G would go a day under normal use, but listening to the radio hammered it a bit.
iphone 4 -326ppi
Sony Vaio P series - 221ppi
Amazon Kindle 1 & 2 - 167ppi
OLPC XO-1 - 217ppi
ipad - 132ppi
There's a comparison 🙂
Chances are you'd never notice the difference anyway.
Lol, I'll come back in a few years shall I, when you are chucking out your 1st gen ipad....
I accept there's not many similar products with much higher screens, but I would expect more from Apple. Why make a thing that can play 1280*720HD...but only give it a 1024x768 screen??
Great thread many don't get the iPad it's not until you get one and use it then realise what can be done with it, but coupled with a nice ui, fast boot time makes a nice device. I did originally think web mail and a couple of apps but it's become so much more.
It is not a laptop replacement but I have since sold my net book it's replaced that and makes more sense as web mail tool but it also does so much more.
The iPad looks expensive but for me and with the apps I use it's giving me back time now you can't buy time so therefore the investment though high is going mean I have more cycle time at the weekend , my net book for whatever reason never delivered that. Coupled with when I am away on business the iPad can coexist in my bag with a corporate laptop and doesn't add much weight, the charger is tiny makes it a great travel companion.
iPad isn't going to suit everyone but it is one of the best bits of tech I have bought in a long time.
is going mean I have more cycle time at the weekend
Seriously? How much actual time is it going to save you, and how?
edit, double post.
Wouldn't have happened on an Apple product 😉
I'm always bemused by these threads. I always wonder if the OP spends his time wandering around Ferrari garages complaining because they're more expensive than a Mondeo and the Mondeo has a bigger boot. Surely one of the first criteria for whether a product is suitable for you is value for money vs the criteria that are important to you. In this case the OP made the decision that, for him, and his requirement that equation doesn't stack up.
I had the same dilemma earlier regarding a Sunseeker Predator... But didn't think it worth coming on here to bitch about the company's pricing policy.
So the ipad is undeniably a luxury item then? Great. Maybe if Apple told us that in the adverts, people wouldn't start threads like these 😐
These people must be real dumb to be using iPads: http://www.apple.com/ipad/pompeii/ What idiots they are!! 😉
So the ipad is undeniably a luxury item then? Great. Maybe if Apple told us that in the adverts, people wouldn't start threads like these
Apple iPad - reassuringly expensive?
Perhaps the fact that Apple are selling them faster than they can make them demonstrates that if anything they've priced them slightly too low...
Molgrips - as my job involves begin away stuff like personal finances is done at the weekend, and we use ms money, by using pocketmoney mrs forge can enter her spends real time as can I the iPad is the pocketmoney server and we can sync the transactions that will save 1 to 2 hrs of faff and reconciliation as there will be none to do at weekend.
Drop box means we can share documents very easily and if something needs doing it can be scanned and in my drop box in seconds which again would have been a weekend task to sort out.
With the right apps it can simplify and make live more efficient I use Things in the iPad to keep track of projects and tasks so I can see instantly what needs sorting and dealing with, it works better than tasks in outlook and for me is working in organising and structuring time and in turn saving it by combining like tasks and ordering them.
Don't get me wrong the same could be possible with a netbook, but the size, boot time, app availability make it a great device to have and use, and it really does save us time.
