been googling it but can't find decent info. What's the definitions of named vs main driver on insurance.
For a while me and the mrs had 2 cars I was main driver wife was named on mine and vicky versa on hers. Now we only have hers, renewal time and being older I'm looking at being the main driver with her as named but don't want to fall foul or regulations or get accused of fronting. She probably drives on more occasions, picking up kids etc, but I do more miles, family trips and wotnot.

No doubt each company have their own T&Cs but does anyone know or can they point me to the general rules/regs

Whoever drives the car most is the main driver, and the other person is the named driver.

yeah it's the definition of "most" that I'm worried about.
Is it miles driven or number of times getting into the driving seat*? I can see either being valid, equally I can see either being used by insurance companies to wrggle out of paying up (cynical sod that I am)

*or indeed time spent in drivers seat vs frequency of visits to seat 🙂

I see your problem. Is it the person who does more trips or the one that does more miles 🙂 I'd say that, as long as you are both regular drivers, there's little to choose. It's not as if they monitor all of your driving.

no reall way they would prove it either way tbh without say a confession on a public website 😉
Personally i would try with either and then do that which was cheapest

I would assume most miles = Main driver tbh rather than who drives most often but does the least amount of time.

That's the common sense deduction I drew, unfortunately common sense isn't all that common when it comes to this sort of stuff 🙂

what I intended doing but slightly nervous about technicalities.

I'd assume miles as it's the only one thats quantifiable really.

If it requires thinking about, it probably doesn't matter 🙂

If you both have accrued no claims, its not uncommon to swap the main driver now and then to avoid your respective no claims expiring due to not holding insurance for ages.

Search says we only get it cheaper if we transfer ownership and registration to me and even then it's not much cheaper, won't bother.

If you are married your property is jointly owned so registration doesnt matter and presuming your not 17 and shes 35 fronting isnt an issue either.

Put theinsurance in your name one year hers the next to maintain / accrue ncd. Just take your bedt guess at main, named driver.
