I have a reasonable eye for composing a decent photograph, even if my skills need sharpening up, however I see so little opportunity for decent shots in everyday life. I want to take lots and lots, of which no doubt only a few will be keepers, yet get frustrated at lack of shooting opportunities.

I see so many great shots on various forums, this included - some are obviously great due to the surroundings, but in every day life what inspires photographers to shoot every day - or are most of you, like me, just waiting for that opportune moment, which doesn't come around that often?

Start carrying a camera all the time, and try to take at least one picture every day you want to share with the world (Flickr etc). Also, when you look at any picture, of anything, start thinking what makes this a good picture? what would I change? which bits do i like best? etc.

You have to take a lot of shite pictures to get a great one, and sometimes you can just get lucky, get a great pic and then struggle to get anything better. quantity will help.

Also, think what sort of pictures you want to take. Opportunities are great, but if you want say, photos of people on bikes doing jumps, you need to go to the jumps, watch for who's good, where they take off, where they land, where the light is etc. look at similar pictures and see what people are doing that you like, and then copy/steal and be merry!

I've found having an iPhone and the camera+ app has really given me the tool to lookout for more photogenic things daily. And if they come out ok on the phone try and go back and shoot them with th big rig.
