I'm planning a month of cycle touring and thought Bali would be a laugh. I've visited a few times but only touristy areas which I was trying to get away from if I go this time.
Does anyone know Indonesia well and can recomend an island simialar to Bali, but a bit more off the beaten track?

Yeah, do you know which ones are worth the effort?

Komodo 😈

Flores was a pleasant and interesting place when I visited (but that was over 15 years ago!)

+1 for flores, i was there 7yrs ago, just don't crash as the hospitals are a bit iffy,

my oldest daughter's middle name is flores she is 6 and a bit, you do the math,

indo i would say is a great place, have you considered ubud as a place to ride in bali, i walked quite a lot of the trails there and its very up and downy with lots of gullys and volcanic rock masses, just a thought

you should also look into Puncak in the high lands (about 1500m asl)
its a bit cooler up there!

Sorry, should have mentioned I'll be on my touring bike with some on/offroad tyres. It'll be mostly road based, but could hack a few single track excursions. Thought i'd do bali perimiter then head to another island. Planning on seeing as much as I can by bike up to about 100km a day, so won't be basing myself anywhere really. Heard good things about Flores, I'll do more research.

I'd have thought the perimeter road wouldn't be as interesting as cutting across Bali and seeing 'real life' all the rice terraces etc.

+1 for cycling from Ubud, I've done that. Batur is a bit of a climb though!!

Lombok might be worth a thought.

Walked Angung Batur in sandels, big mistake not so bad going up, but coming down the lava fields was the most painful 2hrs of my life to date, mad dogs etc,

with a touring bike i would say you have to cut through bali's centre as shadowboxer suggested, there really is no drunk aussies as soon as you get off the coastal resorts.
