Seems to be a hot topic this lunchtime on Radio 4 - what do people think.

Personally, if its not illegal and it helps stop me being knocked off my bike I'm for it.

Couple of articles on the subject.

shirely it's just sad that it's come to this, I'm for it & if they want to stop it, are they going to stop all the vans/cars driving round with chevrons down the side 'looking' like police cars?

We used to drive company car (white estate) with hi-viz jackets between sites on the motorways, amazing how many cars just pulled over out of the way. Will ppl doing that be stopped too?

If it stops anyone being killed or seriously injured then surely that's good?

What's the radio 4's saying?

One of my finest comebacks from a unwarranted barrage of abuse was to reply with. "I'm off duty, but i've called it in to my colleagues. They'll pop around later"

White as a sheet.

I drive a RRV (Ambulance) and you wouldn't believe how many people brake so they are 2-5mph under the speed limit, start using their indicators and pay a bit more attention to how they drive in general. The ones who actually bother to look in their mirrors, that is!

Anything which makes these muppets more aware of a cyclist and drive with greater care and attention has got to be a good thing, hasn't it?

I see lots of horsey riders with these, which seem to make a lot of people think enough

I'd love to see the results of a proper study on the effectiveness of them, I'd bet they work. I'd just shows that a lot of drivers can wait, slow and or leave enough space but make a decision not to 😥

I used to drive a company car in a hi-viz jacket a lot also. It is amazing how many people you see pulling seatbelts on and putting phones down.

Jeez, with the estates I ride though to work, I'd rather NOT be wearing something that says 'I'm a policeman on a bike'....

It's funny how even the rudest motorist suddenly starts driving like a saint, terrified that the big bad policeman will pull him over if he exceeds the speed limit by even 1mph.

Driving home late last night I had a BMW (what else?!) right up my arse, I was doing a touch over 30 in a 30 zone. As I drove past a side road, there was a police car waiting to turn out, he pulled out behind Mr BMW. Who suddenly dropped right back from me, drove carefully and used his indicators.

Two miles later, the police car had turned off and the BMW was again right on my bumper, trying to speed. 🙁

"Polite" ... 😆

They should add "Polite, slow down or I will shot ... the clay pigeon(in smaller print)"

It's a good idea until it becomes a victim of its own sucess and everyone wears them - them drivers will probably assume you're not the police.

+1, with a Volvo estate, it's brilliant.

I was once out touring the North West's motorways with a few transport police and it's amazing how quickly lane 3 became empty once they'd passed the unmarked car full of men in his-viz jackets.

The point 10m in front of their cars became extremely interesting once we overtook them 😉

Everytime I see a Tesco delivery van on the road I have to look twice... White, red writing, blue bits, from the front they always catch me out.

i find just having a camera on my head make em give me more room- might be placebo but ive had significantly less brushing incidents since fitting it .... theres still the normal morons but on the whole i get more room - its mounted on the road side of my helmet and flashes when recording.
