I'm just off the motorway near Standish, in fact. Where can I go for a proper swim tonight? There's a pool near work in Preston that only does evenings on Tuesday, and I didn't bring my kit, and I don't fancy going all the way back for it.

Any ideas?

Leigh has two swimming pools although Chorley baths are closer.

I think out of those three, the Leigh sports centre pool is most likely to have lanes marked out. On the atherleigh way, I;d check first though because it's in the wrong direction for you.

Wigan used to have an olympic size pool, that got knocked down but I think the new "life centre" has a pool doesn;t it>?

Dunno, I thought they knocked it down and didn;t do anything else with it.

/looks up.

Yep, my apologies, it does in deed exist. Right in the twon centre, you can park at the arcade or even behind the town hall and walk round. Neevr been though, don't know what it is like. The loss of the 50m was a crying shame.

Ah... found Wigan life centre has two pools.. got a better timetable now that suggests a proper swim could be had until 8pm tonight. That'll work, ta.

Will be more convenient to swim at lunchtime though I reckon next time.

Well that was a bit rubbish. It was supposed to be lanes, but most of them were occupied with some club, and there was only one lane open for six swimmers, five of whom were moving very slowly indeed....!

I thought you said you swam hard? Or is this not last nights session you're talking about?

Each length I had to wait for a gap! So to make it count I did it flat out.

Just start tapping the feet of the person in front of you.

Wrightington Country Club is just on the other side of the M6 from you, pool is only 20m, but usually quiet after 7pm....

Yeti, I was going so much faster than them I'd have had to swim over them.

Overtake then!

What length times / total distance?

If a pool's really busy it's better to work on technique IMO/

You're assuming the other swimmers are aware of lane etiquette...

Overtake? There were too many people coming the other way! It was 25m, no idea how fast, but it felt fast to me.

What distance? I'm trying to find some motivation for me from your exploits.

Anything less than 100m repeats on 1'30" is not fast enough for the fast lane....

Wherever I seem to end up swimming, the fast lane is full of really slow people; the medium lane is full of old folk barely making ripples, and the slow lane is full of people holding onto the side of the pool chatting.

This means anyone who wants to swim is in the fast lane, but they are not really fast. I'm not fast, and I have to weave in and out of them as I cruise past. I wonder if it's their ego that prevents them going in the medium lane?

don't think it's ego, I think it's ignorance. Some people seem to have absolutely no idea that they're in the wrong lane, or if they do know they just don't care. I find mornings are better as the keen swimmers who better understand lane discipline tend to be in at that time. I had the fast lane all to myself this morning.

At one pool I used to swim in the slow lane as it'd have only one other biddy in it and far more room than the rest of the pool 🙂

I nearly drowned one old guy at Great Sankey baths because I had my head down and was nailing it in a straight line while he meandered across in front of me. I burst out of the water aware there had been an accident but he was nowhere to be seen. I then realised he was lying on the bottom of the pool just waiting to die so I swam down and got him.

They installed as lane rope that very next day.
