Well done the government for sneeking this in today whilst the pasty tax is bigger news
prices with the M25 double for skip hire and 40-60% in the rest of the country
I hope they spend the increase in revenue on stopping the resulting increase in fly-tipping.
I've no issues with taxing landfill, it's a stupid method of getting rid of waste. Most waste is recyclable, which also creates jobs. More cash needs putting into finding and using sensible ways of getting rid of waste.
Previous rules encouraged laziness - there are ways to deal with the fines that this regulation was aimed at.

Most skip firms will only landfill 5 or 10% of what most people put in a builders skip type skip (not talking general household rubbish). They'll trawl through and sort the rest for recycling. The skippies are just using the tax increase as an excuse to up their prices out of kilter with the actual cost increase, guv.

All of it will have come from the sun and at some point have been part of the earth 😀
As such its not the tax thats gone up, its the waste that is no longer taxed as inert (and therefore a lower tax rate).
Trommel fines (so say soil and stone that is trommeled out of the waste) used to be classed as inert so only taxable at £2.50 per tonne. However, the tax man and the EA have said that as other material may come out in the trommel, you can't say that its 100% inert so its now taxable at £64 per tonne, the active rate!!
Best thing is that if as a householder you dig out your garden of soil, the skip cannot go direct to landfill so has to go through a MRF (transfer station). Once in the transfer station, it cannot be classed as inert so they have to paty full tax to tip it!!
Plus they are back dating the tax. A tip local to us is getting hit for £16.2 million in back tax.
This is why skips have shot up in price.
All this is because the tax man had to give out £300 million the other year, so now they've found a way of taking it back.
But its bloody stupid what they've done!!!
