Hi there,

I've got some friends flying in to Aberdeen and hiring a car for the week. They plan on doing Edinburgh for a couple of nights, but then are looking for suggestions for the Scottish experience, guessing castles, lakes, mountains, whiskey?

Any ideas for places to see, stay, and routes to return them back to Aberdeen?

Thanks

Head to Moray for the Speyside experience with the Whisky.
Distillery tours - Benromachs in Forres as it is a traditional distillery not a flashy fandangled modern thing.

Castles hundreds - Urqhart Castle on the Banks of Loch Ness is pretty good about 20 mins south of Inverness.

Black Isle at Cromarty is very nice (a good pub there) and they can watch for Dolphins and seals etc.

For the hills (slightly obvious) Aviemore or Fort William.

The Potting Shed cafe at Inshriach Nursery, near Aviemore, getting there, eating there and looking out the window is one of the loveliest, lulling, scottish experiences I've had in a long time.

The Applercross Inn, Applecross for seafood, although I've also heard great stuff about the Loch Kishorn ASeafood Bar in Lochcarron. Awesome journey to get there. never stayed in Lochcarron but will have to sometime, it looks like a really nice place. If you do, you might want to check out the Lochcarron Camanachd website to see if you can watch some of the mentalness that is shinty.
If you're doing whisky, you can bottle your own at Aberlour distillery
If you can bear youth hostels, check out Carbisdale castle
John o'Groats is a bit of a sh1thole, but a drive along the North coast and down the West is stunning. the most northerly point on the UK mainland is Dunnet head, skip JOG unless you need to say you've been there and head to Dunnet Head instead.
If doing this, Smoo cave is supopssed to be worth checking out.
kylesku is where I had my last serious hangover. The hotel is pricey, but there 's a resaonably priced B&B in the village (although I have my doubts as to landlady's mental health), and the area is breathtaking.

I made a show based in Nairn, some fun stuff around there and Findhorn is an experience. Avoid Peterhead and Fraserburgh met some real nutters there.
