currently have ClamXav installed but its really rubbish..
i know the story about mac & viruses etc but..
How d'you know if it's rubbish or not, if there are no mac viruses?
i mean its rubbish to use....foe ex. i can no longer update the database and cannot find a fix.
I thought the Mac didn't have any viruses worth writing home about because [they're far more secure than PCs | no-one bothers writing viruses for minority systems] (delete where applicable)?
I'm no Mac expert, but my gut feeling is that so long as you're behind a hardware firewall (ie, your Internet router) I wouldn't bother.
There have been viruses. There was a damned annoying one in the late nineties which came from a former Soviet country, and was carried via infected Photoshop files. As we dealt with a lot of agencies there were lots of Photoshop files going backwards and forwards with the virus in. Our Macs kept showing alarms because the files kept getting re-infected by lazy graphics types not checking their computers and wondering why they kept running r e a l l y s l o w l y.
Reports of various viruses and worms keep popping up, but there don't seem to be any out in the wild at the moment. Never hurts to keep vigilant, tho'.
Yeah, I use it on my mac, no problems, gives a little peace of mind.
Always checks when the machine is turned on first thing, then checks randomly while in use.
Use the free version.
I've never used any Anti-Virus software in 15 yrs of using Macs. Just whack the firewall on and you'll be fine.

don't go to the trouble of looking for new software - buy PC

Are viruses really so minor a problem with Macs that many people don't use AV software? Ooh, that actually makes it very tempting to go and buy myself one.

How else can I test out any viruses I develop?
No-one writes viruses any more. Especially not for MACs.
Trojans and client side exploits is where the smart malicious code guys are nowadays.
I use iantivirus. It was free, it's fairly unobtrusive and I've not been hit that I know of so far.
Pah - no need.

Dunno about viruses specifically but there is malware; Snow Leopard has a scanner built in to detect some of the ones which popped up in cracked apps. Think there is only 3 items in their signature DB at the moment 😆
