Buy the parts you need from ebay and D-I-Y. Fixed my iphone for £16; best quote for a repair was £80.

Earphone socket went kaput.... took it apart, wires and bits of plastic fell out... doh! That'll learn me....
Heard shocking stories about Apple service but have seen specific i-pod repair sites circa £40 ish.

Any experiences of these?

I can fix most things .... except electronics!
