This is without prejudice but sometimes I see news/factual programmes where welsh or Scottish speakers arent subtitled yet a Caribbean etc will be.

Why? Invariably I can understand the Caribbean chap as its a lilt(!) whereas on some Welsh/Scottish speaker you miss the odd word and have to catch up.

This is without prejudice and comes under PC-broadcasting I guess.

Ah. It does not bother me - perhaps because I have no idea what the joke is supposed to be.

Racist jokes/banter in private is a different matter, perhaps that's where you're getting confused.

I'm not confused, really. I'm actually a lot more concerned with what groups of people talk about and do in the privacy of their own homes, be they BNP monkeys in Dagenham or Islamists in Luton. I'd much rather people said what they think out here in (semi) public rather than sit brooding in their bedsits.

I cant actually think of an instance of actual racism anywhere on STW (I'm sure there have been some), let alone on this thread. Honestly in my experience I think we're doing just fine, lets all stop looking for hate where there is none.

Like I said above it's a public forum, not someone's living room, I don't really think it's acceptable as you don't know whether the person coming out with the banter is racist or not.

raises an interesting question on defintion - is racism in the eye of the beholder or the speaker?* It reworks the same discussion about taking offence (not just in a racist context): is offence given or taken and if the latter is it the fault of the giver if offence was not intentionally given? (if you get my point)

Oh and uplink's joke is about how Chinese folk speak english, it's perhaps borderline racist as it's not directly derogatory. I wouldn't tell it for that reason as well the fact that it's not that funny.

But I think the real offence here is being taken by what I'll call the 'Clarkson brigade', imagining that their only-very-mildly offensive witterings are upsetting readers of the Guardian - who are then going to try to get Gordon Brown to pass a law against them, or put a speed camera down their road.

I thought this was going to be about someone who says that exact phrase, but then spouts something blatantly racist.

I used to work with a bloke in a sports shop who used to say just that & then utter something that generally involved a lot of racism towards white people. But no one used to say, "well actually that was racist". He was quite a bit older than me at the time, but I probably still should have said something.

Thinking about it though - apart from when I have been abroad, whenever I have been approached by someone wanting to sell me dodgy DVDs they have always been oriental. I wonder why that is?
I know a while ago there was quite a lot of stuff on the news about not buying the pirate dvds as it funded large Chinese gangs, so that perhaps answers my question.
