Pre- xmas update.
Not been on top form the last few weeks - beaten down by man flu so have fallen behind a bit.
But I have managed to finish the floors, rear foot well step, transmission cover and start work on the dash.
The plastic binnacle mount and instrument panel are a wreck so Ive got hold of a new metal binnacle mount (ace work by the guys at Raptor - even comes in cheaper than an OEM plastic one). Cant finish the dash until Ive fitted some new wiper boxes. Theyre in the post on their way.
Im waiting for £100 of bits to come in the post to keep me busy over the xmas hols.
Will be ready to finish fitting the pedal boxes and bleed the hydraulics just as soon as the last part I need to refit the steering column arrives.
Really pleased with how the rear step and floor has come out - Ive had a local metal basher bend some ally and have salvaged a crashed tub for the floor. Now ready to fit the second row seats.

That's coming together really well.
Stoner, this is a thing of beauty. If a jobs worth doing, it's worth overdoing. absolutely stunning
It's coming together nicely and it will be better built than originally. I really hope you have put some serious anti theft measures in place. We have had 2 work horse defenders stolen, at different times, neither as eye catching as yours will be. The neighbouring farmer has also had nicked recently. Now have trackers fitted we are now called if the vehicle is out of a predetermined area or at odd times.
cheers guys.
Yes, itstig, security is on the agenda.
Not going to bother with any door security, but I have a budget for a clutch claw and gearbox lock.

May also stick a hidden fuel shut-off solenoid switch in there somewhere, although I gather pros will quickly diagnose the problem and bypass it at the solenoid.
Fortunately Im not really in much of a high crime area either.
I have to say I'm very envious of your landrover meccano, the skill and ability to put it back together and the space you have in the garage/workshop.
sorry, was joking... 😀 ... see?
Are you painting the bulkhead after you've put the engine back in? Or leaving it bare metal?
MMMMM Want one of these but not practical in Central London
Actually might be a good car for London as I believe the 110 station wagon with 9 seats is exempt from the congestion charge
I missed your "joke" nick 😉 was in the pub.
feel free to run it again though?
Not painting the galv. Little point IMO. after 5 yrs or so, paint will flake off anyway and there's little of it visible - just B pillars, A pillars and a small area above the bonnet around the vents. A mate in the village does vinyl wrapping so I might get him to throw a few pieces on when it's all done. When the vinyl starts to lift (something to do with carbonation/dusting of the zinc layer, happens to paint too apparently) I can just tear it off and get him to throw some more on.
Got a clutch cake sat in the garage if you want it cheap?
Damn you autocorrect
Cake = Claw!!
Leaving all that galv bare - be aware of theft it makes it a high profile theft target
A nice clean restored landy on that plate with all the numbers matching will command a silly high premium in the usa as they can only import 25yo +
tiger - that would be ace. Will PM you later. Got to nip out...
t_r I think mine is just too young for the US on an E plate.
Just in from the workshop, been having fun with the loom lately. Have "retired" a load of extraneous stuff - much simpler loom in the engine bay now. Have worked out where I shall be citing all the lamp & windscreen relays.

More to do in the cabin though. Nearly there, just a few more hours. Now which one is connected to the bomb?

At least it's all fairly straightforwad. Only thing stumping me so far is Yellow w/black wires. Got a few of them at the instrument panel I think they are orphans in mine as I think they are supposed to go to the glow pin preheat timer but mine doesnt have one - I think it's manual on the key. WIll find out one day...
E is 88 isnt it .
Thats exportable - just.
Yull never stop the guys with the lifting gear but id at least stick a pedal box on if i was leaving it in public anywhere
http://forum.landrovernet.com/showthread.php/233766-200tdi-heater-plugs-not-wired-in
good, confirmation that mine (as a 200tdi in a 19j hole) pins glow on the ignition switch through some fat red/brown cable. No relays.
and
http://forum.landrovernet.com/showthread.php/199253-Yellow-relay-socket-behind-dash
Im not as worried as I was about the random yellow box floating around hardly attached to anything anymore - it shouldnt be anyway as I have removed the rear windscreen heating circuit.
Im glad these forums exist. WOuld have been much harder without access to such an accumulation of knowledge from other people's trial and error.
Bit of a breakthrough this week.
Got the loom fully working including the new heated windscreen.
Really satisfying wiring up a new loom section and flicking the switch without any burning smells...
Also have built a new relay junction box to hold new relays to manage all the high current stuff to the front lamps, the heated windscreen and the windscreen timing relay (orange thingy)
New intercooler and turbo hoses and I gave the intercooler a good swill out with petrol.

She's coming back together. I can see the end in sight now.

BLING!
Looking good there Stoner. Want one.
In fact we were having a chat the other day and I said I'd like a weatherproofed soft-top just for fun - she said get one then!
Shame I've got no spare cash 🙁
I'm loving thus thread. Lolling at getting one myself, I also have been told to just go and buy one, just need to find a job first now though.
Can you do my old Merc when you've finished this...
That would be more up an old mate's Street. He has half a dozen classic mercs. Including 2 former German army staff cars he imported from South Africa.
At least that was until he had twins...
That's very nice.
I've been very pleased with my x-eng security stuff nice stuff
Also think about a tracker prices are very low now
And the silly amount of. Doors and bonnets getting stolen
A bearing hammered into the hinge bolt works very well
Opps that's all a bit down best sorry
A bearing hammered into the hinge bolt works very well
Speaking from bitter experience there? Out of interest, how might one then remove the door? Drill the bearing out?
Youd never drill a SS bearing from the bolt head.
From experience you can safely cut the hinge and bolt heads off without damaging the pillars or doors, you then just use some molgrips on the bolt shank left. Sacrificed hinge though.
Bit of a pain given how quickly the hinges wear out mind 🙂
I dont think my bonnet would be much sought after since it has chequerplate rash and isnt a puma, but I might consider adding a bike lock to the back of it to prevent a quick get away.
Personaly I've not done that with my current one yet but will as soon as I fit the new hinges.
I've not suffered any loss as yet but does seem a problem at the moment
Maybe mine is to tatty
The bearing in bolt head is also good for ground anchor bolts
Speaking from bitter experience there? Out of interest, how might one then remove the door? Drill the bearing out?
Of all the Landys I've had I've never needed to take a door off.
Mine have 5mm Stainless BB in the Torx sockets
If I ever need to remove the door there is a nut on the inside, behind the door card 😉
Electrics pretty much now all done.
All the MOT sparky stuff is completed and working. Two wings both refitted. The instrument panel is refitted and the looms all tidied up. Nearly all the work has finished in the engine bay - just got to bleed the clutch and brakes.
Unfortunately Ive managed to break my phone's camera lens so dont have many pics, but have just stolen junior's christmas present to take a few snap shots.
Yesterday and today Ive been working on the auxiliary switch bank for the spot lights, interior lights, windscreen washer, heated windscreen, USB charger and digital LED voltmeter.
Really pleased with how it's come out. Just need to fit a relay to link the rear working lamps to the reverse gear switch line from the back of the gearbox.

I'll take some more pics next week of the refitted wings and cabin space once Ive fixed my phone
Headlining done.
Apparently the broken sill is ready for picking up at the end of this week. We'll see. Only taken 6 months 🙁
Wings & slam panel on. (as is new grille, but no pic of it)

Aux electric panel fitted too, although this photo is of it before it was finished

Will try and get some smarter pics. Going to start on a door today I think.
While you've still got access why don't you buy another one of those LR double washer jet thingies and install the two in the two lateral holes in the BH so you get four jets? The pump is more than adequate for the flow and four jets gives you a decent deluge.
I have a new wipac tank and jet - I get plenty of squirt out of the single new double jet already. But since Im not refitting the dash, I will always have access to the bulkhead to fit another later. I might even fit a third wiper box for shits & giggles 🙂
Looks good. My 6 year old son keeps asking when we can build one together, I told him a few years ago that we do one when he was a lot older..... I think he's getting impatient!
This is a great STW thread. Keep up the good work and keep us informed. I hope to do something similar one day but I best concentrate on family finances for now. A garage I could fit a landy in would be good as well.
ooh ooh, oohh
Like the headlining!
Tell me how you did covered it!!
Seen one guy wind his pipe to the washer jets round a heater hose to try and heat the water inside it. Not sure if it did any good but he thought h t it was trick.
One thing I,d fit again if had another defender is a set of tree sliders. Reckoned it improved the side impAct protection.

cant lurk in here Tiger...
😉
Looks brilliant, this is on my list of things to buy and tinker with. Sadly I don't have the time, space or money at the moment.
Stoner, what sort of extra lights are you fitting? I've got a couple of Hella Comet 550 (I think) square driving lamps gathering dust in the shed. They were the type used on the Camel Trophy 110 roof racks. I may still have some Cibie Turini fog lamps somewhere too.
Pete - there was a light bar that came on it when I got it. The 7" spots were tired and the mirroring knackered but parts to repair it were impossible to find so I picked up 4 basic 55W rectangular lamps for £30 ish. Bargin. The two lamps that came on the rear were salvageable.

Thanks geoffj 😉
donated mudflaps gone on nicely.
Checked the ol' dear turned over yesterday and she fired second time. But Im still getting a sticky starter that might give up on me at the wrong time so Ive taken it back out and will strip and give it another going over, possibly with more lube on the drive axle. At least it's still relatively easy to get at. Will try it one more time, and if it's still playing up then Ill have it back out again and will find a replacement for it.
I'm not really into cars, but I like seeing a job well done - this looks fantastic!
Looking good
You planning on doing some ploughing with that tow bar?
