Its time to pick some brains....
Im pondering a hunka bivi, but I like to have my thermarest mat on the inside of the bag. Does anyone else do this with the standard size hunka? (for what its worth Im about 5'10" and a 44" chest).
ta!
I struggle with the standard Hunka (it's the same size as most normal bivy bags). To get mat, sleeping bag AND me inside I need the Hunka XL. I'm roughly the same size as you.
Having previously researched this, the general consensus was... go for the XL
Works with xl
I've got one of the army gore-tex bags, me + mat + bag + rucksack + loads of room to move!
Downside, it's not really that light as it's so big.
Keep meaning to get some waterproofing tape and cut it down to a more minimalist size and fit some elastic loops inside to feed the mat under and keep it in place.
Yup go with the XL, it doesn't weigh that much more and is more versatile when it comes mat/kit arrangements.
I’ve been using the hunka (thats the alpkit one yeah?) with a thermarest inside and it’s been great. I wanted the XL but it was sold out. I’ve done quite a few nights in it and it’s perfectly fine. I’ve slept like a log!
Im 5’10”, don’t have a clue about chest size. I’m 80kg if that helps.
XL for me, always with mat on the inside
I have only done bivi twice but put the mat under the bivi bag to protect the bag. Is this incorrect bivi useage?
That's how I used to do it when Alpine climbing as I'd often be bivvying on rocks, also that was with a closed cell foam mat, but it seems more usual practice these days to have the mat on the inside.
I use a quilt and it's generally better with the mat on the inside - lying directly on bivy bag material is a bit weird.
Thanks Whitestone. I still use a closed cell foam pad due to robustness.
I always use the mat inside the bivi bag as I’m using a quilt to sleep in..
