I've had to disable automatic sync because I was ploughing through my data allowance pretty quickly. However this now means that I don't get notifications of new email in Gmail. Is it possible to just receive email notifications without syncing everything else like facebook, twitter, the weather etc etc at the same time.

For my HTC Hero, which is basically the same operating system, you go:
settings -> Accounts & sync.
There's a menu there which lists all your online accounts that sync automatically. Just deselect the ones you don't want running all the time.
Usually, the apps themselves have a setting to change their sync frequency - for example I've set my weather one (weatherbug) to do it every 12hours, instead of the standard setting.
For the GMail app specifically - open it up, bring up the pop-up menu, select Accounts, highlight the account you want to control (using your scroller/trackball thingy), then right-click (menu button) & select 'account settings'.
You can deselect "background data" there to stop it.
I think/guess the 'auto sync' option decides if it's affected by doing a 'sync-all' to update all your accounts/apps on the phone.
