Moved into a lovely old building but what with it being an old building it's bloody cold!

The initial idea was to install a woodburner, but the chimney sweep has just been round and informed us that two of the chimneys have gas pipes running into/through them and that the third (and best situated) chimney has been blocked off somewhere. He can't tell us where as it's a give storey building, but has guess is that it's blocked somewhere near the top floor die to the loft conversion...

The radiators are of three kind I remember from school, big chunky things. They just don't pump out enough heat. The thermostat is set on 25'c.
We've also got very high ceilings; approx 9ft high.

What are gas stoves like? I used to have a gas twitter but remember the heat feeling wet.

What can we do to save us from high energy bills and keep the place warm? (other than moving house)

Insulate, insulate and insulate...

And you can't really have big old buildings and cheap bills...

We've an AGA in the kitchen, wood stove in the lounge and airing cupboard upstairs fed by solar hot water. About £3k pa all in.

Insulate to keep the heat that is produced, inside.
Secondary glazing and heavy curtains with pelmets, good draught exclusion. Curtains of the doors too. Is it carpeted?
That's about it on a rented property, I guess.
