We will be in touch
We've almost entirely renovated our house including adding an extension and loft extension. And for the first time throughout the entire build, I went Hmmm?
Need the loft shower area tiled. One wall 1.6m x 2.0m, and both ends so two walls 800mm x 2m.
I was asked to have materials ready. And the quote for labour is £432
If it is what it is then fair enough.
Far too much really.
I used to pay a really great tiler £30/m2 and that included adhesive grout and trims.
He was expensive but very good.
It depends type of tile, what the wall is like etc etc. I would say thats fine. I paid my tiler around that but he was meticulous and took days over it - and the worst tile is less than 0.5mm out every joint lines up across corners and onto the sloping ceiling, Quality costs. I was happy to pay that much for the quality of the job
Can’t you do it yourself, it’s really not hard. I’d say I could do that in 2 days, neither of them being particularly long ones either. If you haven’t any fancy cut outs or tiles then it is very easy, just take your time.
My first attempt was significantly better than the in-laws “pro” done at the same time
Fair enough. It's a loft extension shower. Basic ceramic, new plaster no fittings in yet.
I think it's probably because all the other tiling came in with the build works,
I tile for a living and if walls are new and good, £35-£40/m2 is the going rate including adhesive and grout, I’d probably charge £250+VAT for your job without seeing it including everything except the tiles.
EDIT - just noticed ceramic tiles in new plaster. I’d prime the walls 1st, but even after that, unless tiles are crazy sized a pro tiler should get that done in an easy day fixed and grouted.
Tilers here were quoting 25 per SQM pre covid, now it's 35.
Still much cheaper than your quote.
When I did mine I used wadi tile backer board to cover over the walls (they were bad) and provide an easy surface to tile too. also made sure it was all sealed up properly to stop any ingress. Possibly over the top. As it was fine for the last however long as tiles straight on plaster. Just wanted to do it right
does his price include tanking , which it should , supply and fit not including tiles , £400 , depending on how decent the walls are , most plastered walls are not all the flat.
if he was recommended to you,
get it tanked though ,
We paid 25 per sqm in scotland couple years ago. Pre covid but I thought pricy as the tiler easily did 2sqm an hour. Thats nearly 100k a year.....
I was going to post a flippant comment about earning 100k a year. I just love the way people assume the hourly rate you charge is the the rate you pay yourself.

Indeed.
Tiling is easy enough to do well, but it will take a novice a lot longer than a pro. Thinking back all my first attempts were pretty bad, but we were poor then so had no choice. I’m awesome at it now.
Use posh grout is all I can add, it gives a nice Matt finish.
It’s very satisfying when it goes well, and you’ll look at it evermore with sadness and regret if you make even a slight mistake.
The other biggee for me Is putting the full tiles in the corners you look at, and the cuts away in the places you don’t. Obvious I know but...
Loft shower? Already fully waterproofed? Tiling onto plasterboard seems like a leak waiting to happen. Why not use aqua board or similar?
[edit] Based on what other folks are saying, [/edit] Maybe this is the ‘not a job I really want but if you insist I’ll do it even though it’ll take a full day out of proper jobs’ quote? Or are you in a very fancy area?
Doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. I assume the chaps been for a look or spent time on a quote. It’s a small job so that’s the price. £400 to make it be done.
The kit isn’t cheap and it’s easy to tile badly.
FWIW I tile me own walls. I don’t do floors.
as the tiler easily did 2sqm an hour. Thats nearly 100k a year…..
Man, I wish you were anywhere near right, I’d have retired by now.
For the quote itself, it all depends where you are, who else you can get and what others have quoted. It's a market, and we're in a strange time. A good tiler doing a good job can't be priced up in the same way as a tin of beans or some plastic tat delivered 'free' from amazon.

As for 100k a year... Sure.
Because he tiles constantly every day, all the hours. No travel, no costs, no trips to get materials, no time spent doing (ridiculously high) quotes, or invoices, or (especially) answering the phone immediately. No contingency costs. No holidays. Sure, 100k based purely on "I reckon he did two metres last time I looked"
£432 would be £180 day rate, so two days plus VAT, doesn't seem that bad to me, that day rate is in the middle of what I know trades around here charge.

Aye, I did chuckle at that, sounds like someone trying to apply spreadsheet logic to real world jobs!

my tiler cut all the edge tiles so it looks like a full tile goes round the corner. No full tiles into corners. Looks much better that way. Also arranged it so no slivers of tiles anywhere ( this is in a bathroom with sloping ceilings)
Of course we do not know how good the OPs chap is - but even as a very experienced diyer I know that no matter how long I took I could not do such a good job as the chap I paid to do it.
Anytime I see tiling now I look at it with what I learned and I have seen so many tiles jobs that look OK but when you look closer are really not that good.
Seems reasonable to me. I was quoted double that for 3 walls around a shower and the floor. It was more money than I could justify so have done it myself. Took me an age but I’m very happy with it - not 100% to my eye as I know where the imperfections are but not noticeable to anyone else looking in.
I’m nearing the end of a full renovation (no extension) of my house and went down the route of project managing and getting self employed tradesmen in as and when required mixed in with lots of diy. Average price for a tradesman here in Aberdeen is £200/day labour so it soon adds up!

Aye, try doing that in an old house that doesn't have a plumb wall to speak of!
Cheers. I want a pukka job. The tiling in the 1920's part of the house is superbe and that didn't have a single straight wall. This bit is essentially new build.
I'm in Brighton.
Tjagain- that is next level shit.
I was going to post a flippant comment about earning 100k a year. I just love the way people assume the hourly rate you charge is the the rate you pay yourself.
And tilers can of course work 40 hours a week, don't need to spend any time quoting, invoicing or driving to jobs. The van, tools, insurances, adhesives and trims are all free too.
I am surprised we aren't all tradesmen with it being so easy and lucrative 😉
jkomo - next level shit as in good or bad?
want a photo or two so you can see how good it looks?
I think I know what TJ means and I think I agree with him.
The longest part of the job when I do it is mapping out all the vertical and horizontal breaks (windows, doors, bath, bog, basin, skirting & ceiling) and producing a scheme that results in no slivers.
And I've given up bumping up the price for a job I don't want. Because when they accept I end up with a job I hate but can't afford to turn down.

Both equally correct IMHO... the bathroom I did is better than the one the professional did but it took a LOT longer... However at the same time I had to move all the piping, fit cement board, replaster walls and remove a consumer unit/cupboard and fit sink/loo/LED lighting so not only did it cost less but it allowed me to do the other stuff at my pace as well. (and add a joist for the loo to secure to instead of drywall as previous)

Some of the best tiling I've seen is on the madrid metro from that era ... some of the worst tiling I've seen is in a modern custom made office for REPSOL in Madrid.
Seems ok if he s good, the quality is remembered long after the price. I had a bad tiling job done in an old house I spent years looking at bad workmanship.
Now wised up, last 2 bathrooms are 99% good. Next time I will manage the tiler better but will probably scare him off the job.
yes thats exactly it Bigjohn. I also had a mirror put on the wall so to get everything right in the layout we actually moved the sink 4 inches left so as to get the tiling right ( mirror goes central over the sink, large tiles)
to the OP don't forget belt and braces waterproofing. My chap put in a 3 part invisible seal around the bath. I also used water resistant plaster board and tanked the room
Two words.
Wet wall.
It's fabulous.
What is not fabulous is grout and sealant in a constantly wet environment.
decent tiles look much better.
shouldn't be constantly wet either with heating and good extraction.
plus if you get your wife to keep ontop of the cleaning the grout/silicone should look good for years.
I use a Karcher window vac on my tiles after every shower, takes a couple of minutes and means I only need to clean the tiles a couple of times a year. That said I'd still make sure it was tanked

Are you Kim, or Aggie? 😆
