Hi,

We need some driveway gates for privacy and to stop little one from escaping.
Just spoke to a local guy who can supply and fit wooden gates but he is talking of around £1000.
Sounds like a lot to me?

Sounds ok, but obviously there are a huge number of factors.

Size? Hardwood? Softwood? Painted? Single or double? Square? Fancy curves? Hinge type? Automatic?

You can buy cheap ones on eBay from abut £500, but they're made from white pine, of the thinnest section and you'll be lucky if they last 10 years. Obviously, the wider the drive, the stronger they'll need to be otherwise they'll drop in the middle.

Are they like this...

Or like this?

There's a difference.

Where are you and what width?

We have some iron ones that we removed that are free if you can collect them. Will need posts and mounts though.

As an ex-professional woodworker/carpenter i'd say there could easily be £500+ worth of materials in a pair of large solid gates when you include hinges/hardware.
This could be considerably more in hardwood such as Oak.
Even a set of small basic softwood gates could have a couple of hundred quids worth of materials.

As per kayak23's post - huge difference between basic slatted gate and ornate heavy hardwood options.

Decent wood is very expensive. I know this as someone who has host had bespoke American oak bookshelves fitted.

Supply and fit for 1000? Including setting posts? If anything, it might be a bit cheap unless they are basic field gates.

There's quite a bit of labour involved in fitting gates and fences due to digging the post holes and it's heavy work.

Needs about a metre deep hole with around half metre square cross section* , that's a big hole to dig with a spade.

* first google result

Just been speaking to a steel fabricator I use.
Apparently there are overun with orders for gates and railings, and thus giving clients silly prices at the moment ( as in expensive ) . Trouble is they are the least expensive silly price and they are getting a lot of work.
If those timber gates are bespoke, handmade etc then £1k is a good price for supplied and fitted.

this -

MY welders currently with a mate whos making his own Gates due to this. (he can actually weld)

They ended up looking sweet - hes built steel box section gates and then inset the same wood as his fence to the gate after painting.
