We have a foam insulated tank in our airing cupboard, it's a modern one the house is only 13 years old. But it's still quite warm in there, and it adds heat to the kids' room which is already pretty hot in warm weather and they complain about it.

Is there any mileage in adding more insulation? Tempted to either add another jacket, or put boards on the inside of the cupboard itself. Anyone done this?

Another jacket is worth a try, cheap and quick, boards won't be either!

I'd look at your thermostat, recommended is 65°C, they are sometimes set way higher.

Yes, I wrapped one of my tanks in some 27 layer insulation intended for walls and roofs and the other one in recycled polyester. The result in both cases is excellent; the tanks stay warm and don't add to the heat in the house in Summer.

Would it be worth lining the cupboard with foil (the type you can put behind radiators) to reflect heat in? Can't decide if this would work- stopping heat passing out the cupboard or just make the cupboard hotter causing heat transfer?

Thanks Ed, I knew you'd have tried it! Do you have a link to what you used?

Al - yes, quite shocked at how expensive boards are.

I started with just a jacket around the front and back, but the heat was still radiating into the room.

I added slabs of rockwool from top to the bottom and completely blocked the thing up. I can still open the door. Net result, no radiating heat! Downside, have to remove all the slabs for the annual service....

The wool also reduced the noise from the whole thing.

If your tank is already insulated then the heat is likely to be coming from your pipes. Lag those if they're not already lagged. No harm in getting a jacket for your tank though. Cheap enough, but the foam insulation is pretty good.

Doing pipe insulation now. It had degraded and fallen apart over the years so needed a refresh anyway.
