Any recommendations for anything half decent for monitoring the home whilst away?

A Texecom system with COM-GSM would text on alarm and allow remote reset and status enquiry via text if thats what you were after.

Burglar alarm with SIM card [u]CAN[/u] be set disarmed and reset remotely. Or monitored remotely. Or intercommed remotely.
On an alarm state, it will first text the zone triggered, and if not reset, ring you.
You can then use the intercom to monitor for intruder noise

We've got a canary. The gadget not the bird. Actually works very well. Turn it on and off by phone from anywhere or it can do this automatically when leave the house. If it detects a change or movement it sends you a message and a link the video. You can also watch live. Pretty simple.
