MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
I have done a search of this and noted back at the start of COVID people bought various office chairs. Are there any regrets on the ones people have bought?
I havent bought yet but suffering from bad Sciatica.
Deciding what to go for though appears to be pot luck when buying online.
Currently looking at 2ndhn and other similar sites but no real knowledge as to whats good/bad.
Thanks
*Watches with interest*
From a thread on here we got 2 refurbished Herman Miller ones from Crown Workspace. Both were a bit spendy but they've both been great, good delivery service and a million times better than sitting on a normal chair.
RM.
Crown workspace seconded - ordered two and one had a small crack in the plastic holding a castor - collected and replaced within a few days. Excellent since. Good price and service.
Still happy enough with my Secretlab Titan but if money were no object I'd get a Herman Miller Embody
I managed to get my company to buy one for me. They shut my office and told me to work at home 4 years ago. I pointed out that they have a duty of care to make sure that my working environment is appropriate and they eventually agreed to buy me one.
I got a ZentoSmart chair. It must be good as I just don't notice it and if I'm suffering from middle-aged aches and pains I just slightly adjust it to get more comfy. They're not cheap but I was going to buy one on eBay if my company didn't agree to buy it.
If you are not average height, build, weight etc. it's certainly worth going to a local shop to sit on a few. I've got a weird, long knee to hip distance so need a deep seat.
The one I got from Staples is pretty rubbish.
Anyone want a rubbish office chair? Collection only, Tier 4.
My Giroflex G64 from 2ndHnd.com is still going strong and is much more comfortable than the cheap Argos thing it replaced. Works well for me.
It's not quite as good as the Herman Miller Aeron that I had at an old firm, but it was also 1/4 of the price.
We bought a couple of kneeling stools/chairs they've been great.
A bit smalled that a full on office chair so if space is an issue they help
Bought a Giroflex G64 I think from 2ndhand for £130 after recommendations on here, it's not been a revelation but must be better than what I had before as I don't seem to ache as much.
Not much I can help with on the chairs question, but as regards the sciatica, it's worth googling some stretches to help with that.
Try a slump stretch, along with whatever else you can find, and do them every day...
I also bought a kneeling chair. It’s been a revelation. Really strengthened up my core and stopped the tilt I had in my pelvis.
I have a Hag Capisco (the proper padded ones) at both home and work for exactly this reason. They are absolutely brilliant but £££. I managed to get my personal one second hand off eBay a few years ago in a dodgy orange.
However, also look at the root cause and think about getting some physio and do core strengthening work. The chair only treats the symptoms, not the cause.
Vertagear Racing Series PL4500.
Comfy, lots of adjustment and heavy duty....
Plus it made my 13 year old well jel 😉 🙂
Diffrient world by human scale
My work initially said they wouldn’t fund chairs for home so I bought one cheap from Staples in March or April sort of time. It clearly was designed for occasional use rather than office veryday use as the padding in the seat element is already going flat and there’s a bit of play where the seat joins the support under it. If home working is here to stay for the long term I’ll stump up more money for something better 100%. If it’s only until the summer and then there’s more of a split 30% office / 70% home and out seeing customers again I’ll probably just stick with this one.
I was tempted by those threads to buy a chair but then I used my daughter's 80 quid Ikea job .... Ive been perfectly comfortable.
Good luck
I acquired an Orangebox Do from my previous employer when homeworking started which I forgot to give back. Miles better than the chairs in my new office so starting to get back pain again. Will get a workstation assessment soon and see what the new employer comes up with.
Picked up a Herman Miller Cosm just before lockdown from a 'used' office furniture place but brand new and boxed for about half retail. Very happy with. I find a lot of 'ergo' office chairs (eg the embody) pretty hideous which might be a consideration depending on where its' going to live at home.
Top end 'designer' chairs hold their value second hand and they will last a long time - warranty on Herman Miller stuff is 12 years and that's supposed to include 24/7 use.
I had an Aeron before that I bought used and 10 years later sold it on eBay for about £50 less than it cost me.
As others have said - a good chair is unlikely to solve back pain unless a bad chair was actually the cause.
I can't recommend the Humanscale Liberty enough. They've doubled in price since I bought mine twelve years ago, but I sit it in 9-5 every day and it's still practically as good as new. You can find refurb ones online from the office clearance companies.
I had a Herman Miller Aeron which was excellent until it started leaking oil everywhere.
I sold it for £350 on Gumtree and I bought an Ike Markus. It's not quite as nice as the Aeron, but it doesn't mark it's territory either.
And yes I know the shaft on the Aeron can be replaced, but I fancied a change anyway.
Giroflex G64 - been sat on it for the last 10 years*, although on my second seat pad.
It was second hand off ebay and had seen some use, hence the new seat pad.
Still going strong and no thoughts of replacement.
I got it as they used to be in the office I worked in and I did about 8 years there.
* not continuously...
Very very happy with my Secretlab Omega softweave, due to secondary progressive ms I spend the most of my life sat on my arse and the omega is the only chair I can comfortably sit in for long periods of time, its so good I bought one to keep at my mums house
Very happy with my Steelcase Please v2 from 2ndhd
Chairs? Pah. Standing desk for me, much better for lower back pain as I'm constantly moving around and using all my muscles.
Although it is an electric sit-stand so I can drop it down after my lunchtime walk or ride to give my legs a brief rest 🙂
