Any recommendations for a SIM card I can use while in Canada for a couple of weeks?
What operator are you with?
Some do inclusive roaming to US & Canada now (Three, and now EE on some plans, possibly others).
You could get a PAYG SIM card there, but depends what you want to do. If you're planning on calling other people within Canada (who are not on a UK network roaming), then it might be cheaper. With roaming, even at UK prices, you'll pay an international call to call a Canadian number. On the other hand if you're calling people with UK phones or phoning home, then a UK SIM/plan might be better.
If it's data you're after, just turn off all the data and use WiFi whenever you can. Unless you can get inclusive roaming that is, and depending how much it allows you to use.
If using another SIM, you'll need to make sure the phone is unlocked of course.
with 3 but think the free roaming is US only, not Canada
phone is unlocked, mostly after data - but not sure how good the cover actually is
I have a Knowroaming sim sticker which does the job nicely for places not included by 3/EE. The only problem is that texts don't get forwarded and you can only have one sim active at any time (unless you have a dual SIM phone).
Big advantages are that WhatsApp is free anywhere you can get a signal and data is very cheap if only using occasionally (to clarify it's about £4/day for all you can eat, which is fine if you're only away for a few days). When UK networks charge £2/min and £10/MB in some places it pays for itself quite quickly.
Disadvantages are a fairly high up front cost, and it connects to the slowest and cheapest network available. But then 3 does that and it's not hugely troublesome.
