Awesome, thanks for the link, very much my era, had a lot of those early 80s tunes on 12" and the UBB albums. My first gig was grandmaster melle Mel, sadly couldn't make the dj shadow renegades gig, nice idea Bambaataa is a legend.

Ahhh, ive not seen Scratch for years....Might have to dig it out tonight and refresh. Mix master mike talking about summoning aliens by his scratching...classic!

I was at Manchester Renegades of Rhythm tour too. A phenomenal night. Hearing the break and beats come out and knowing that this was probably the vinyl the samples we've been listening too for 35 years originally came from. Looking forward to checking out the link.

The most surprising, in the best possible sense, hip-hop documentary I have seen is BBC's Beat This - A History of Hip Hop. Made in 1984, given the subject matter and the time it was made it is incredible.

Quite on of the best documentaries I have seen full stop.

Its kicking about on YouTube I think.

I love these hip hop threads, not only because hip hop totally kicks ass, but also because there's no arguing and whatnot, everyone just appreciates the good things in life.

That's what real hip hop is all about yo.

I need to give the latter years a go. I have kind of fallen out of love with American hip hop over the last few years (not the old stuff though).

I feel more of a connection with the UK stuff nowadays (delegates, taskforce, skuff, fliptrix, mouse outfit, jam baxter, manage and caxton press etc etc).

It seems a lot less Hollywood and like where U.S. rap was probably 20 years ago (in terms of content).

Chris Read's Classic Material mixes take the same year-by-year approach and are also well worth checking out. I like the way he pairs familiar acapellas with different beats.
