Driving it home tonight it developed a horrible sounding scraping/rattling sound like chains being dragged along the road. It is only noticeable at low speeds, I can't see anything dangling down, exhaust looks OK (superficially at least) and there was no event as such - just a very twisty road. No sound when stationary or above about 20mph. It is a Ford Ka. We will be taking it to the garage on Wednesday but it would be nice to have an idea first (expensive month for one reason and another already).

The heat shield is loose on my wife's Ford Fusion. That sounds bloody awful at low revs.

Could well be the exhaust heat shield above the back box, they are not very robust.
Mine went on a fiesta, I just ragged it off as it's made out of a similar material to what disposable BBQ trays are made from.

Exhaust cowling off rear box coming off and rubbing on inner real wheel as it rotates..

Common problem on Fiat 500's, simply because the steel they use is cheese from the 70's.

(the 500 uses same parts as Ka, new shape)

A crumbling brake pad can scrawp and screach but it tend to vary when you use the brakes. Scrapping noises that don't modulate when you're using the brakes can be the guard / cowl on the back of the brake disks corroding and collapsing and rubbing on the disk. On some cars the spring that the handbrake pulls against can be anchored to this cowl so as it corrodes the spring and pull it into contact with the disk.

Another culprit can be a bit of gravel getting snagged between the calliper and the disk - tends to get louder over time as the stone gets worn flat and the contact area gets bigger and bigger. Sometimes driving in reverse will ping it out

Check all the plastic shields are mounted correctly, inner arches, bumper shrouds etc. These can be bent into contact with the wheels or road above a certain speed.

Really need to know what Ka it is as there's 3 versions now: the original based on a Fiesta floor pan, the Fiat 500 clone and the new one based on another platform share but the first model to come out using it.

metal shield somewhere is loose. Sounds like torture but is (hopefully) trivial.

Thank you - a couple of things to look at and hopefully not too expensive (2008 original shape).

Ruined brake discs / pads were my first thought.

Another culprit can be a bit of gravel getting snagged between the calliper and the disk

Back in my first car I once had a godawful racket coming from a wheel, I thought the hub was boned. A bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth later, it turned out to be a stone rolling around inside the steel wheel. At low speeds it clattered about like a coin in a washing machine, at higher speeds centripetal force pinned it against the rims so it was soundless.

A seized or past it handbrake had this effect on my car.

Had similar happen twice. both times it was gravel in the brake. Problem was solved when I spotted my 2yr old feeding stones into the wheels and I could put a stop to it.
