I'm in turkey just now and travelling back through Bergamo in a few days. Initially I had only a 4hr wait there but my inbound flight was cancelled so I changed it to the day before, thinking I could have a day there.

Looking at the regs for entering Italy now, I'm not sure whether this will actually be ok.

https://www.esteri.it/mae/en/ministero/normativaonline/decreto-iorestoacasa-domande-frequenti/focus-cittadini-italiani-in-rientro-dall-estero-e-cittadini-stranieri-in-italia.html

I'm hoping I can rely on these travelling through Italy:

2: ... "travel is allowed to and from any other Countries for reasons of work, health or absolute necessity, or to return home or to one's place of residence or dwelling, as well as for reasons of study."

4: ... "persons travelling through the country for no more than 36 hours to reach their country of residence (e.g. entering Italy by ferry from Greece to continue by car to their home in Germany)."

Anyone care to opine? I could buy different flights but would prefer not to lose the £££.

Not sure, but I'd make sure I knew where the Italian language version of these regs were on my phone.

Looks fine to me. From the page you linked:

travel to Italy is freely allowed, without having to justify their reasons for travelling, to the citizens of EU Member States, Schengen Member States, United Kingdom, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or the Vatican, as well as foreign nationals residing in the above mentioned States and members of their household (spouse, civil or cohabiting partner, dependent children aged below 21 years, other dependent lineal relatives). Specific restrictions apply to persons who transited or stayed in Armenia, Bahrein, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bosnia Herzegovina, Chile, Kosovo, Kuwait, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Oman, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic, Serbia (see FAQ 1 above);

Edit ignore me. I see you might be allowed in - but might have to self isolate.

Cheers. My head's in a bit of a mess with it.

I don't think you'd get away with those exceptions. You're not driving through Italy (which might take 36 hours) but having a day in Bergamo - i.e. you're not there for the shortest possible time, which is what my reading of the exceptions is.

I am travelling to Italy by air. Can I catch a connecting or other flight for another domestic or international destination?
Yes, airport transit is allowed. However, you are not allowed to leave the airport if you are travelling from any Country except the following: [list not including Turkey]

I see that... however it is the shortest time I can be in Bergamo!

Urgh...whether to wing it...at the risk of having to stay in the airport...

If you do try to 'wing it' you at least need to print out and fill out the self declaration form:

I would expect you'll be allowed to enter as a UK citizen (question 2, third bullet in the link) but will be required to self-isolate, so you'll need to book a hotel that will take someone quarantining and able to deliver you room service. You must not use public transport so you'll probably also want to pre-book a taxi or car hire there and back (you have to put it on the declaration form). Good luck.
