MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
So I've started to get a few orders for my 3D maps of the Malvern's and need to come up with a name for the 'company' so that I can sort out some sort of logo/signature to go on them and so I can set up a website (possibly)
If you don't know, this is what I'm making:

It's a 3D, CNC machined map of the Malvern Hills (other areas to be added hopefully)
A couple of ideas include CN-Scene, AluMap..
What ideas have you got?

Also, you need to machine that wooden frame so the metal bit sits in it slightly.

With a thing like this it's got to be really descriptive tbh because a lot of people who'd like it, or put it in their b&b or shop or whatever, will have no idea what it is. So no CNC or milling or anything. And no metal either because IIRC you can do this in wood too? And not everyone will know what relief means in this context either.
I'd honestly go with The 3D Map Company, it's not clever or witty but it'll do the job better than anything else I can think of. And give it a tagline if you want something clever, just keep it somewhere that it doesn't detract from the actual job.
Though I do like Miniature Machined Metal Mountain Man
Northwinds post seems sensible to me. Hardly any one will know (or care) how these are made so the name should aim to describe the finished product.
Although I do like the cheese factor of 'what a relief!'
Ive no ideas for a name but one of these would be perfect for above our fire place.
Agree with north wind. Keep it descriptive.
As such, I think Bulging Mass would work.
Yeah, I think Northwind has hit the nail on the head. Descriptive of the product not the process..
The Ground Up Sculpture Company.

I claim no credit for the name, you nailed it! I just added some why.
My brother's company is called Solus Technical Services. It's actually a pretty clever stage direction pun, just, nobody but him knows that. And for everyone else, it tells them absolutely nothing. it's a word of mouth business so that's not the end of the world but still.
The Tactile map company
The 3D map company. Nobody on the first page of Google using them apart from tacmap.
So that's a no for bulging mass?
I need to know what the solus pun is!
@cpt.sasquatch, you did come up with a great name. I think the description from NW emphasised it very well 😉
Bizarrely I was about to write up exactly the same description as it's simply a question of how I'd look for it on Google, but when I opened the thread Northwind had done it much more eloquently than me. 🙂
Good luck with the project.

Make sure both the .com and .co.uk domain names are available and take them both, really, even if you aren't ready to create a website. If the domain isn't available then find a different name
Sorry if this obvious but I've had friends caught by this before. They pick a beautiful but simple name that isn't available but they use it anyway. They then use a longer but different domain name of which there is already an existing company using the .com version so it is very difficult to find them using internet search.

The adventures of Stevie D,
they nearly made a song about it.
After a busy weekend going round visiting a few different places to look and display these pieces it's become apparent that it would be classed as a sculpture and have a few galleries interested in them (and a fair bit of interest through FB)
So will be looking for something for a name that has 'sculpture' in there somewhere..
Thanks for all the ideas guys, there's lots to play with 🙂
So, Scale Sculptures then?
🙂
Have a check here http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk//wcframe?name=accessCompanyInfo as well as .com & .uk domains.

Hit Google with some preferred terms and see what pops out, I usually go for images until I see what I'm looking for.
3D sculpted maps doesn't show me anything like what you're proposing to sell.
3D maps, on the other hand, does put me in the right sort of area. In my opinion.
The other part is to think and define what exactly it is you do. Do you sculpt or make maps? How do you want the customer to view you? Who is your customer? And how do they perceive you?

I love this business idea stevied, wish you all the best. From someone who has intimately studied and photographed/painted the Malverns for over a decade - i can appreciate the attraction. It's obvious from this and other threads that landscapes become very special to many people. I had a similar (yet appreciably different) idea to yours (pre-affordable 3D printing) about twenty years ago - yet would back then had to hand-sculpt and paint each one so filed the idea as a novelty limited edition art project. You have set me off dreaming again!
As for names - I too vote The 3D Map Company
