It is indeed a very odd film. One of those that, as the credits roll, you both look at each other with a mystified look on your face and say "WTF was all that about then?"

Admittedly my #3 guess was that, a complete guess, and I've not watched shutter island. G/f read the book & rated it highly, she started the film and thought it utter guff...
