It was a true story about a German officer captured during the Second World War by the Russians and sent to Siberia I think?
He then escapes and walks a couple of thousand miles to freedom.

Polish not German officer.... he had a long way to walk hence the imaginative book title.
Deluded, that's the one! Fantastic read, highly recommend it.
