This is going to be an obvious question to those who know but it's all a bit new to me. Just got a new MBP and playing around, it seems I can do some file/screen sharing with the wife's iMac which is on the same network. Hers is hooked up to the router via Ethernet and mine via the airport. If we open things up to sharing, is this only visible to people on the router network (ie, those who know our hidden randomly named SIDDS and randomly constructed password for it) or could any old Joe see it if they wanted?

What type of sharing?

If you're inside the router firewall then no-one outside should be able to see in. If you're using back to my Mac from outside then there is a possibility you could be intercepted.

File sharing will be between your two computers on the encrypted network that you have set up. So no, Joe will not be able to see anything as he can't get onto the network. I think you also have to give permission at the other end ie other computer as well in the set up. We have network of IMac on ethernet/router/broadband and 2 Minis for the kids on airport. All very happy esp me as I get to play all of their new music on iTunes!!!

Unless you can enter the administrator password for your wifes iMac from your MBP then all you will be able to view from the MBP is the shared/public folder on the iMac.

Someone parked outside your house with a Mac will be able to see the fact that there is an iMac and an MBP close buy but unless they have those passwords they are not going to get access.

At least I think that's the deal anyway.

Someone parked outside wouldn't / shouldn't be able to see anything regarding your network if it is encrypted other than it does exist. Wouldn't see your macs or what computers are on the network. Unless of course he has some very very decent hacking skills 🙂

You can do the whole screen / file sharing even outside your own network (ie over the internet) but you have to have it set up that way, with password and account information for the computers.

Cheers guys, I'll have a little tinker with that. Not very successful last night. Think I need to sort out permissions. Could print and see the other machine last night but couldn't go anywhere within.

go into system prefs
go to sharing, click file sharing (make sure its ticked)
press the plus underneath shared folders to add places you want to share
click the new item on the list
adjust the permissions with the list to the right
