MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Can anyone help me, my computer just keeps rebooting it self. Every so often it starts windows xp and behaves it self for a few minutes and then goes into a cycle of rebooting.
Is there any thing I can do?
Power supply faulty ?
HTH
How could i check if it is the power supply?
Might also be a virus, they can cause the continuous reboot cycle. Trouble is the PC's not on long enough to sort it out. If it's the power supply it might be overheating, have you put any new hardware in recently? New graphics cards can easily push a supply beyond it's rating.
Quick test - as its starting there will be a screen that allows you to enter the bios - normally its the logo of the company that makes the PC or the motherboard. What you seen before window.
You want to press the key that takes you into the bios, normally F10 or F2.
Once in the bios DO NOTHING but see how long it stays on without rebooting. If it stays up here for 20 to 30 mins your good.
If it stays on press F8 as windows is loading and choose boot to safe mode and run your AV and anti spy ware stuff. This should resolve.
If it goes off then you have a hardware problem. Check for thermal issues first. Simply leave it off for a few hours and then try it again. If it works better / longer you have a thermal issue. Get some thermal paste and re-grease the top of the CPU. Google will show you how! If its not that its most likley power supply or motherboard. Beg / borrow a powersupply from somewhere and see if that fixes it. If not try it one memory dimm at a time (google will help here as well). If it still dies replace the motherboard (or system - what ever is cheaper!).
What type of PC is it?
How exactly would you check google when the PC is bust? 😉
Unplug any USB stuff!
Could be power supply, overheating cpu or more likely I'd say a software/hardware conflict.
It may be worth, if you are happy to do so, opening up the machine and making sure everything is connected nice and tightly as well.
And yeah, remove everything attached to the pc, bar keyboard and mouse.
With the other PC your using to post here? How exactly would you check google when the PC is bust?
My guess is the hard drive has developed bad sectors, download seatools on another pc and burn the image to a cd, then boot from this and run the long test.
Had exactly the same thing this morning. PC was rebooting on the XP Start up cycle. Wouldn't even go into safe mode.
Ended up reformatting hard drive. Work PC so everything important was on the network. Apart from the contents of Itunes.
With XP its always worth doing a repair install... or even a side by side install without formatting the disk to get data back. Unless its your work PC and they dont care about the iTunes music. 😉

Firstly disconnect your PC from the internet. If you have a virus it's possible it's doing all sorts of stuff online without you knowing.
Then log on to another PC, visit either a popular anti virus website or this one for example http://www.techmixer.com/kaspersky-rescue-disk-load-kaspersky-antivirus-2009-using-dos/ and download and burn a bootable anti virus cd (instructions provided in that link, get a friend to help if you need to) or email me and I'll try and guide you.
Start your PC with that cd in the drive and it will do a virus scan. With any luck it will find and sort a virus.
Try it, if it fails, post back on here for further ideas.
Good luck!
Sack windows and move over to Ubuntu.........unless you play games you can do most other things on it
